About
Tracking the achievements of the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO), this collection chronicles space missions undertaken between 1975 and August 2022. ISRO, India's national space agency, operates under the direct oversight of the Prime Minister of India via the Department of Space (DOS). The data offers insights into the history of India's development as a spacefaring nation, a status achieved following the groundwork laid by the Indian National Committee for Space Research (INCOSPAR) established in 1962. It serves as an essential log of significant launches and their specific objectives.
Columns
- Rank: A numerical identifier or ranking associated with the mission record.
- Name: The specific designation or title of the mission or satellite, such as "Cartosat-2 Series Satellite."
- Date: The precise date when the mission launch occurred.
- launch vehicle (vrhiclr): Details the type of launch vehicle employed for the mission (e.g., PSLV-XL, PSLV-CA). Note that five per cent of entries are missing for this column.
- Application: Specifies the intended use or purpose of the mission, frequently categorised as "Communication" or "Earth Observation." Nine per cent of entries are missing for this column.
- orbital type: Classifies the type of orbit achieved, such as SSPO (Sun-Synchronous Polar Orbit). Note that this column has a high degree of missing data, affecting forty-eight per cent of records.
Distribution
The data file is provided in CSV format, designated as 'ISRO missions - till AUGUST 2022.csv', with a file size of 14.29 kB. The structure consists of six columns and 213 valid records detailing missions.
Usage
This data is highly suitable for quantitative analysis related to global space exploration trends and policy. Ideal applications include historical studies of technological advancements in space science, economic modelling of governmental expenditures on space programs, and research in specific disciplines such as Earth Science, Atmospheric Science, and Astronomy.
Coverage
The temporal scope spans nearly five decades, running from the inception of the mission log on 19 April 1975 up to the final recorded launch on 7 August 2022. The geographic focus is on missions executed by the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO), a globally recognised government space agency. Data availability varies significantly by attribute; while Rank, Name, and Date are fully validated, records for Launch Vehicle, Application, and Orbital Type have notable proportions of missing values.
