About

This dataset provides essential information on groundwater levels in California, crucial for understanding changes in water storage and movement within basins. Groundwater, accounting for approximately 30 percent of the world's readily available freshwater, is vital for agricultural, municipal, and industrial uses. California's water management systems are intricate, integrating natural features like snowpack and groundwater basins with engineered structures. Effective water resource management necessitates intelligent planning systems, particularly utilising artificial intelligence, to ensure the rational use of these resources and provide adequate water support. This data helps water managers make informed decisions for people, farms, and the environment, as well as protecting against flooding.

Columns

  • STATION: A unique identifier for each monitoring station, often corresponding to the State Well Number.
  • MSMT_DATE: The specific date and time (in PST) when each groundwater level measurement was collected.
  • WLM_RPE: The Reference Point Elevation utilised when collecting the groundwater level measurement.
  • WLM_RPE_QC: A Quality Code associated with the WLM_RPE measurement, indicating data reliability.
  • WLM_GSE: The Ground Surface Elevation at the location of the well site.
  • WLM_GSE_QC: A Quality Code associated with the WLM_GSE measurement.
  • RPE_WSE: The depth of the water surface, measured in feet below the reference point.
  • RPE_WSE_QC: A Quality Code for the RPE_WSE measurement.
  • GSE_WSE: The depth from the ground surface to the water surface, expressed in feet.
  • GSE_WSE_QC: A Quality Code for the GSE_WSE measurement.
  • WSE: The Water Surface Elevation, measured in feet above Mean Sea Level.
  • WSE_QC: A Quality Code for the WSE measurement.

Distribution

The dataset contains 1,048,576 records across 12 variables and is provided in CSV format. It is available in both daily and monthly mean versions. The daily data was collected from 25 March 1992 to 27 December 2022, while the monthly data spans from 1 December 1969 to 1 December 2022. The daily CSV file is approximately 68.92 MB. Updates to this dataset are expected annually.

Usage

This dataset is ideal for:
  • Developing intelligent groundwater and irrigation planning systems.
  • Informing water management decisions for agricultural, municipal, and industrial water demands.
  • Monitoring water-level fluctuations, especially during periods of drought or other hydraulic stresses.
  • Analysing the effects of various forms of recharge and discharge on aquifer systems.
  • Creating regional groundwater level forecasts to support water resource planning.
  • Supporting the development of artificial intelligence engines for water management practices.

Coverage

The dataset covers groundwater levels in several counties across California, including Butte, Colusa, Glenn, Mendocino, Modoc, Sacramento, San Joaquin, Shasta, Siskiyou, Solano, Sutter, Tehama, Yolo, and Yuba Counties.
  • Time Range (Daily version): 25 March 1992 to 27 December 2022.
  • Time Range (Monthly version): 1 December 1969 to 1 December 2022.
