About
Measures armed conflicts and conflict deaths worldwide, helping users understand how livelihoods are affected by large-scale violence. This data synthesises information drawn from six established research sources, including the Uppsala Conflict Data Program (UCDP) and Correlates of War (CoW). Measuring conflict mortality presents inherent difficulties, as parties involved may underreport or overreport deaths, and documenting the full death toll can be challenging for independent observers. This product addresses these complexities by aggregating figures related to civilian and combatant deaths resulting from fighting in various types of conflict, such as interstate and intrastate violence.
Columns
- Entity: Defines the country or geographic area where the conflict data is recorded. Six unique values are represented, including regions like Africa.
- Year: The temporal marker for the recorded death counts, ranging from 1989 to 2023.
- One-sided violence: The number of deaths where only one party to the conflict is reported to have inflicted violence.
- Non-state: The recorded death toll resulting from conflicts strictly between non-state actors.
- Intrastate: The number of deaths occurring within conflicts that take place primarily inside the borders of a single state.
- Extrasystemic: Deaths associated with conflicts involving a state fighting a non-state group outside its own territory or the state system. (Note: This column shows zero counts in the sample provided).
- Interstate: The number of deaths attributed to conflicts occurring between sovereign states.
Distribution
The data is provided in CSV format (
deaths-in-armed news v2.csv). The file size is 7.26 kB. The dataset contains 7 columns and 210 valid records, based on the statistical analysis of the columns, showing 100% validity for all fields and no missing values in the sample.Usage
This product is highly useful for measuring armed conflict severity and its human impact. It is ideal for conducting robust data analytics, creating sophisticated data visualizations, and developing software models focused on international relations, conflict resolution, and stability assessment. Researchers frequently use this type of metric for academic work on war and peace.
Coverage
The dataset covers a time range beginning in 1989 and extending up to 2023. It includes data on many countries and years, focusing on conflicts categorised as interstate, intrastate, and involving one-sided violence. The data tracks mortality among both combatants and civilians across the globe.
