About

This dataset presents information on electric vehicles (EVs) currently registered within the State of Washington. It encompasses both Battery Electric Vehicles (BEVs), which are fully electric and charged via an external power source, and Plug-in Hybrid Electric Vehicles (PHEVs), which combine electric motors with another fuel type, such as petrol, and are also charged externally. The data originates from registrations processed by the Washington State Department of Licensing (DOL). It includes details related to Clean Alternative Fuel Vehicle (CAFV) eligibility, which is based on specific fuel and electric-only range requirements outlined in Washington State law for retail sales and use tax exemptions. Newer BEVs generally feature an electric range of 30 miles or more.

Columns

  • VIN (1-10): The first 10 characters of each vehicle's Vehicle Identification Number.
  • County: The county where the registered owner resides.
  • City: The city where the registered owner resides.
  • State: The state where the registered owner resides.
  • Postal Code: The 5-digit postcode in which the registered owner resides.
  • Model Year: The model year of the vehicle, determined by decoding the Vehicle Identification Number.
  • Make: The manufacturer of the vehicle, determined by decoding the Vehicle Identification Number.
  • Model: The model of the vehicle, determined by decoding the Vehicle Identification Number.
  • Electric Vehicle Type: This field distinguishes the vehicle as either an all-electric (BEV) or a plug-in hybrid (PHEV).
  • Clean Alternative Fuel Vehicle (CAFV) Eligibility: Categorises vehicles as Clean Alternative Fuel Vehicles based on fuel and electric-only range requirements as outlined in Washington State legislative sessions.
  • Electric Range: Describes how far a vehicle can travel purely on its electric charge. For BEVs, a range of zero may be entered if not researched.
  • Base MSRP: This represents the lowest Manufacturer's Suggested Retail Price for any trim level of the particular model.
  • Legislative District: The specific section of Washington State where the vehicle's owner resides, as represented in the state legislature.
  • DOL Vehicle ID: A unique identification number assigned to each vehicle by the Department of Licensing.
  • Vehicle Location: The geographic centre point (latitude and longitude) of the postcode for the registered vehicle.
  • Electric Utility: Identifies the electric power retail service territories serving the address of the registered vehicle in Washington. This field was added starting from March 2022.
  • 2020 Census Tract: The census tract identifier, combining state, county, and census tract codes from the United States Census Bureau's 2020 census (GEOID). This field was added starting from June 2022.

Distribution

The dataset is available in a CSV format, specifically "Electric_Vehicle_Population_Data.csv", with a file size of approximately 29.05 MB. It is structured with 17 columns and contains around 122,000 records of vehicle registration data.

Usage

This dataset is well-suited for a variety of analyses concerning electric vehicle adoption and regional characteristics. Potential applications include:
  • Analysing the geographical spread and concentration of EVs across different counties and cities in Washington.
  • Tracking trends in specific EV types (BEVs versus PHEVs) and the popularity of various vehicle makes and models.
  • Evaluating the impact of CAFV eligibility on consumer choices and the uptake of tax-exempt vehicles.
  • Investigating electric range data to understand battery performance or consumer preferences.
  • Exploring the distribution of EV ownership in relation to electric utility service areas.
  • Assisting urban planners and local authorities in planning for EV charging infrastructure.
  • Informing public policy development related to sustainable transport and clean energy initiatives.

Coverage

The data focuses on electric vehicles currently registered within the State of Washington, United States. Its geographical coverage includes detailed information down to county, city, postal code, legislative district, and 2020 Census Tract levels within Washington. The dataset provides snapshots of vehicle registration counts, with notes indicating that monthly counts for counties can fluctuate due to refined assignment processes. Certain fields, such as 'Electric Utility' and '2020 Census Tract', were introduced in March 2022 and June 2022, respectively, indicating evolving data attributes over time.
