About

This dataset provides daily readings from 310 water sensors across Catalonia, Spain. It includes data from Reservoir Level, River Gauge, Pluviometer, and Aquifer Piezometer sensors. The readings are collected four times a day (0:00h, 6:00h, 12:00h, and 18:00h) and continuously updated. The primary motivation for this dataset is to monitor the current dry period in Catalonia, characterised by reduced precipitation and low water levels in rivers and reservoirs. It serves as a valuable resource for real-time analysis, trend visualisations, and the development of short-term prediction models to support water management actions, such as potential water supply reductions.

Columns

The dataset includes various measurements related to water resources:
  • Timestamp of the sensor read: Records the precise date and time when each sensor reading was taken.
  • Gauge Sensor Reading (e.g., 080060-001-ANA01, 080180-005-ANA001, etc.): These columns contain the actual values from river gauge sensors. Gauge sensors typically measure river discharge (in m³/s or l/s), river level (in cm), canal discharge (in m³/s or l/s), and total discharge (in m³/s or l/s). The sample provided showcases multiple gauge sensor IDs with varied ranges of recorded values, including both positive and negative measurements, indicating changes in water levels or flow. Some entries may be missing.
  • Other sensor types, detailed in metadata files (not directly in the sample), include:
    • Reservoir Sensors: Provide absolute level (masl), reservoir volume (hm³), and percentage reservoir volume (%).
    • Pluviometer Sensors: Measure rainfall intensity (mm/h).
    • Piezometer Sensors: Record absolute piezometric level (masl), water temperature (°C), and conductivity (µS/cm).

Distribution

The dataset is provided in CSV format, with separate files for different sensor types (e.g., gauge_sensors_reads.csv, reservoir_senors_reads.csv). The gauge_sensors_reads.csv file, for instance, is approximately 3.69 MB in size and contains data from 10 out of 178 possible columns for gauge sensors. Readings are structured daily, with four readings collected per sensor per day. The data spans from 12 January 2023 to 9 April 2025, with an expected daily update frequency.

Usage

This dataset is ideal for:
  • Real-time analysis: Monitoring the current water situation in Catalonia.
  • Trend visualisations: Identifying patterns and changes in water levels, flow, and precipitation over time.
  • Prediction modelling: Building short-term models to forecast water levels, potential drought conditions, and the impact of water management actions.
  • Environmental research: Studying the effects of climate change and dry periods on regional water resources.
  • Water resource management: Informing decision-making for local authorities regarding water supply and conservation.

Coverage

  • Geographic Scope: The sensors are strategically placed around Catalonia, Spain.
  • Time Range: The data collection began in early January 2023 and is continuously updated daily, with readings currently available up to 9 April 2025.
  • Demographic Scope: Not applicable as the dataset focuses on environmental water resources.

Who Can Use It

  • Data Analysts: For extracting insights and generating reports on water availability and usage.
  • Environmental Scientists and Researchers: To study hydrological patterns, drought impacts, and climate effects.
  • Local Authorities and Water Management Agencies: For planning water supply reductions, implementing conservation strategies, and making informed policy decisions.
  • Students and Academics: For educational projects, hydrological studies, and developing predictive models.
  • Software Developers: To build applications that visualise water data or integrate into larger environmental monitoring systems.
