About

Presents detailed statistics on urban population dynamics across the globe, specifically tracking the percentage of the total population residing in urban areas, as well as the overall urban population count. Sourced from World Bank data, this longitudinal dataset spans more than sixty years, from 1960 through to 2020. It serves as an essential resource for analysing historical urbanization trends, demographic shifts, and global development patterns.

Columns

  • Country Name: The geopolitical entity or country name.
  • Country Code: The standard ISO code for the corresponding country.
  • Indicator Name: The full name of the World Bank indicator used (e.g., Urban population (% of total population)).
  • Indicator Code: The technical indicator code used by the World Bank data source (e.g., SP.URB.TOTL.IN.ZS).
  • 1960 through 2020 (Annual Columns): Columns representing each year from 1960 to 2020, containing the measured urban population percentage for that country in that specific year.

Distribution

The data is provided in a single CSV file, typically named urban_percent.csv, with a file size of approximately 158.85 kB. The structure includes 65 columns, covering country identifiers and 61 years of annual measurements. There are 266 unique country entries within the data. Valid records are consistently available for 262 to 263 countries for each annual measurement across the time series.

Usage

This data is ideal for several applications, including:
  • Conducting socio-economic research focused on historical urban growth and demographic changes.
  • Performing time-series analysis to track continental and global shifts in urbanization rates.
  • Identifying countries that have experienced rapid urban expansion or, conversely, negative trends in urban population levels.
  • Comparing the relative development and urban maturity of various nations over several decades.
  • Developing predictive models for future urban infrastructure requirements based on past growth trajectories.

Coverage

Geographic Scope: Global, covering 266 countries and territorial entities. Time Range: Annual data spanning from 1960 up to and including 2020. Demographic Scope: Focused entirely on population statistics related to urbanization, specifically the urban population total and its percentage of the country's total population. A small number of countries (typically 3 or 4 records) show missing data for certain years.

Who Can Use It

  • Academics and University Researchers: Utilising the data for theses or publications in fields such as sociology, development studies, and geography.
  • Data Analysts and Data Scientists: Creating visualisations and models to analyse global macro-trends and shifts in population density.
  • Government and Non-Governmental Organisations (NGOs): Informing policy decisions related to urban planning, resource allocation, and sustainable development initiatives.
