About

This collection of physical activity recordings documents a personal running log spanning from May 2018 through July 2020. It provides raw data collected directly from a GPS watch, detailing attributes such as distance, pace, heart rate, and cadence for nearly 700 individual activities. The primary purpose of this data is to facilitate the estimation of an individual's "fitness" level as a function of time, allowing researchers or analysts to potentially identify periods where peak fitness was achieved, possibly correlating with personal records. The data is largely composed of running activities (98%).

Columns

  • Activity Type: Defines the nature of the exercise; primarily running, but includes small percentages of other activity types.
  • Date: The specific calendar date when the activity took place.
  • Title: The automatically generated title assigned to the activity, such as "Baltimore Running."
  • Distance: The length of the activity, measured in miles (maximum observed distance is 18 miles).
  • Calories: An approximate measure of calories burned during the session.
  • Time: The duration required to complete the activity.
  • Avg HR: The average heart rate recorded throughout the activity.
  • Max HR: The highest heart rate reached during the activity.
  • Avg Run Cadence: The average running cadence (steps per minute) recorded.
  • Max Run Cadence: The maximum running cadence achieved.
  • Avg Pace: The average speed of the run, measured in minutes per mile.
  • Best Pace: The fastest pace recorded during the run, measured in minutes per mile.
  • Elev Gain: The total elevation gained during the activity.
  • Elev Loss: The total elevation lost during the activity.
  • Avg Stride Length: The average length of the runner's stride.
  • Best Lap Time: The quickest recorded time for a defined lap.
  • Number of Laps: The count of laps recorded, typically based on a per-mile setting.

Distribution

The raw data is stored in the activity_log.csv file, containing 17 distinct columns. The structure consists of 689 valid records representing individual logged activities.

Usage

This data is suitable for detailed training analysis, estimation of physiological limits, and longitudinal fitness tracking. Specific uses include modelling fitness degradation and improvement cycles, validating training methodologies, and analysing the relationship between cadence, stride length, and overall running pace. It can also be used to explore data quality issues related to wrist-based heart rate monitoring and GPS tracking inaccuracies.

Coverage

The activities recorded span from 30 May 2018 to 15 July 2020. It is important to note that the log contains a notable gap, specifically covering the period from the summer of 2019 to the spring of 2020, resulting from a planned break after finishing competitive college running. All data points were collected in the context of the activity owner’s personal efforts.
