About
Statistical records detailing the flow of asylum applicants across Europe, compiled annually up to 2007. This data captures the number of individuals applying for asylum, categorised by their country of origin (citizenship) and the specific European country or group receiving the application. It provides essential insights for demographic and socio-political analysis focused on migration patterns in Europe.
Columns
The data file, typically supplied in CSV format, contains five key fields:
- citizen: Identifies the citizenship (country of origin) of the asylum applicant. There are 212 unique countries represented.
- unit: Specifies the measurement unit used, which is consistently 'PER' (person).
- geography: Denotes the country or aggregated EU group (such as EU28 or EU27_2020) receiving the asylum application. There are 31 unique geographical entries.
- date: Represents the year in which the data was recorded, ranging from 1985 to 2007.
- value: The numerical total of asylum applicants recorded for the corresponding citizenship, unit, geography, and date combination. Note that a significant number of records in this column are listed as missing.
Distribution
The transformed data is structured as a CSV file (
asylum_applicants_in_europe.csv), derived from the original TSV format. It contains approximately 144,000 records. The temporal data has been pivoted to provide date/value pairs, transforming the original wide format (where years were columns) into a longer, more analysis-friendly structure.Usage
This data is highly suitable for statistical studies concerning demographics, public health planning, and social aspects related to migration. It is an excellent resource for trend analysis when combined with other social or economic datasets. Researchers can use it to map historical asylum trends and compare applicant numbers across different years and receiving nations.
Coverage
The data spans a temporal range from 1985 through to 2007, with statistics recorded on a yearly basis. Geographical coverage includes individual countries within Europe, alongside aggregated indicators for major European groups (EU27_2020 and EU28). The origin scope covers 212 distinct citizenships.
