About

Provides data for analysing potential socio-economic differences between states classified as "Right to Work" (RTW) and those that are non-RTW. This material is designed to facilitate statistical evaluation of key economic and labour indicators across the United States. RTW legislation dictates that unions must represent all employees in a unionized workplace, regardless of whether the employee is a union member. The dataset focuses specifically on measuring and comparing union membership rates, union representation rates, poverty rates (which the original analysis intended to include), and median household income (also an intended inclusion) across these state categories.

Columns

  • StateName: The full name of the United States state. There are 51 unique state names recorded.
  • StateAbbrev: The standard abbreviation for the state name.
  • Region: The US Geographical region to which the state belongs (e.g., South, West).
  • RightToWork: A Boolean indicator showing the right to work status of the state (True/False). Approximately 55% of the records indicate a True status.
  • Year: The year to which the recorded data applies. This includes data for 2020 and 2021.
  • UnionMembership: The percentage of the state's workforce who are registered members of a union. Values range significantly, from 1.7% up to 23.7%.
  • UnionRepresentation: The percentage of the workforce who are represented by unions. Values range from 2.0% to 25.7%.
  • Difference: The calculation showing the variance between the union representation rate and the union membership rate.

Distribution

The data is tabular and presented in a CSV file format named RTW_Membership.csv. The file size is relatively small, measuring 1103.43 kB, and it includes 8 distinct columns. The total number of records is 1321, reflecting data collected for 51 states across two separate years (2020 and 2021). All columns are fully validated with no missing or mismatched values.

Usage

This dataset is ideal for beginners wishing to perform statistical analysis of state-level policy impact. It is particularly useful for modelling and visualisation projects, such as generating graphs using tools like ggplot2. It supports academic or policy analysis regarding the effects of Right to Work legislation on labour market statistics and related economic indicators.

Coverage

The dataset covers all regions of the United States. The temporal scope includes the years 2020 and 2021. Geographical coverage includes data for 51 unique state entities. The data focuses on labour market percentages (union membership/representation) across state workforces.
