About
Details regarding the popularity of baby names, categorized by sex and ethnic group. The data captures the ranking of names based on frequency, derived from civil birth registration records. Each entry represents the relative popularity of a name within a specific grouping. This information can be used to represent the general popularity trends of names, although users should exercise caution when assessing the rank of a name if its associated frequency count is close to 10, as minor year-to-year variations may occur.
Columns
The dataset contains six key columns:
- Year of Birth (YOD): Specifies the calendar year the birth registration was recorded.
- Gender: Indicates the sex associated with the name (primarily Female and Male).
- Ethnicity: Classifies the ethnic group associated with the birth registration, including HISPANIC and WHITE NON HISPANIC, among others.
- Child's First Name: The specific name recorded. There are over 3,200 unique names represented.
- Count: The raw frequency count of the name within that specific grouping (Year/Gender/Ethnicity). Counts range from 10 up to 426.
- Rank: The popularity ranking of the name, ordered by frequency, spanning ranks 1 through 102.
Distribution
The data is structured as a CSV file named
Popular_Baby_Names.csv, with a file size of 2 MB. The data file consists of 49.5 thousand individual records. All key fields show a 100% validity rate, indicating no missing data in these categories. This dataset is static and is not expected to receive any future updates.Usage
