About

This dataset provides a detailed overview of fuel consumption and CO2 emissions for various ship types operating in Nigerian waterways. It includes data on ship types, routes, engine efficiency, fuel consumption, and emissions, making it highly suitable for environmental impact studies, maritime operations optimisation, and predictive modelling. The project aims to provide actionable insights for optimising maritime operations and reducing emissions by exploring the fuel efficiency and environmental impact of these vessels. The dataset was generated to simulate realistic maritime operations in Nigeria, considering common ship types, fuel usage patterns, and emissions.

Columns

  • ship_id: A unique identifier for each ship.
  • ship_type: Categorises ships into four main types: Fishing Trawler, Oil Service Boat, Surfer Boat, and Tanker Ship.
  • route_id: An identifier for specific routes, such as Port Harcourt-Lagos or Lagos-Apapa.
  • month: The month of operation, encompassing 12 unique values.
  • distance: The distance covered during an operation, with values ranging from approximately 20.08 to 498.55.
  • fuel_type: Specifies the type of fuel used, either Diesel or HFO.
  • fuel_consumption: The total fuel consumed by each ship type during operations, measured in litres, ranging from about 237.88 to 24648.52.
  • CO2_emissions: The amount of carbon dioxide emitted based on fuel consumption, measured in kilograms, ranging from approximately 615.68 to 71871.21.
  • weather_conditions: Describes the weather during the trip, categorised as Calm, Moderate, or Stormy.
  • engine_efficiency: The efficiency of the ship’s engine, expressed as a percentage, with values typically between 70% and 95%.

Distribution

The dataset is provided as a CSV file titled ship_fuel_efficiency.csv, with a file size of 122.25 kB. It contains 10 columns and consists of 1440 records or rows.

Usage

This dataset and associated project are valuable for:
  • Maritime operators aiming to optimise fuel efficiency.
  • Environmental agencies focused on monitoring and reducing CO2 emissions.
  • Data scientists exploring use cases in transportation and environmental sustainability.
  • Predictive modelling, particularly for forecasting fuel consumption and CO2 emissions based on ship type and operational factors, aiding in planning for greener maritime logistics.
  • Environmental impact studies and maritime operations optimisation.

Coverage

The dataset focuses on Nigerian waterways, providing detailed information on various ship types operating within this geographic scope. Data is available across 12 distinct months, implying coverage over a full year, though specific years are not mentioned. The dataset accounts for four main ship types: Fishing Trawler, Oil Service Boat, Surfer Boat, and Tanker Ship.
