About

Provides detailed global records of earthquakes spanning from 2150 BC up to 2023 AD. This historical archive addresses the immense pain and suffering caused by these natural disasters. By analysing the global patterns and historical frequency captured here, researchers can derive insights essential for developing improved early warning systems and robust prediction models. This catalogue offers a deep overview of global seismic activity.

Columns

The dataset contains 38 columns detailing the physical event characteristics and subsequent impact:
  • Year, Mo, Dy, Hr, Mn, Sec: Components of the time and date of the event occurrence.
  • Location Name, Latitude, Longitude: Geographic markers identifying where the earthquake took place. Location Name often includes the Country and Place name (e.g., CHINA: YUNNAN PROVINCE).
  • Focal Depth (km): The depth of the earthquake focus in kilometres (minimum 0, maximum 675, with many missing values).
  • Mag (Magnitude) & MMI Int (Modified Mercalli Intensity): Measures of the earthquake's size (Magnitude ranges from 1.6 to 9.5) and the severity of ground shaking.
  • Tsu & Vol: Label counts related to specific characteristics of the event.
  • Impact Metrics (Deaths, Injuries, Damage ($Mil), Houses Destroyed, Houses Damaged): Raw numerical counts of casualties and structural losses. Damage values are listed in millions of U.S. dollars at the time of the event.
  • Description Columns (e.g., Death Description, Damage Description): Coded values (0 to 4 scale) providing descriptive estimates when exact counts are not available (e.g., 4 corresponds to 'Very Many' deaths or 'EXTREME' damage).

Distribution

The data is structured as a CSV file named earthquakes.csv, with a size of 614.71 kB. The structure consists of 38 distinct columns. The total number of records documented in the primary index (Year) is approximately 6,350. Data fields, particularly time components and impact metrics, show varying levels of completeness, with some columns like Total Missing having nearly 100% missing values.

Usage

  • Conducting Data Analytics and Statistical Analysis of historical seismic activity worldwide.
  • Performing Time Series Analysis to identify patterns in earthquake frequency over millennia.
  • Enabling Geospatial Analysis and mapping of high-risk regions.
  • Training and validating machine learning models designed for disaster prediction and risk assessment.
  • Researching the socio-economic impacts of Natural Disasters, especially regarding human casualties and property damage.

Coverage

The dataset covers global earthquake events "around the world." The time frame extends historically from 2150 BC up to 2023 AD. Geographic coverage is indicated by specific locations such as CHINA: YUNNAN PROVINCE and RUSSIA: KURIL ISLANDS, spanning a Latitude range from -62.9 to 73.1 and Longitude range from -180 to 180.
