About

The dataset contains two main types of observations: pollution data and auxiliary weather data.
Pollution Data Columns:
  • date: Date of measurement.
  • pm25: Fine particulate matter (PM2.5) levels, measured in µg/m³.
  • pm10: Fine particulate matter (PM10) levels, measured in µg/m³.
  • o3: Ozone (O3) concentration, measured in µg/m³.
  • no2: Nitrogen Dioxide (NO2) concentration, measured in ppm.
  • so2: Sulfur Dioxide (SO2) concentration, measured in ppm.
  • co: Carbon Monoxide (CO) concentration, measured in ppm.
  • Lat: Latitude where the measurement was taken.
  • Long: Longitude where the measurement was taken.
  • City: City where the measurement was taken.
  • District: District where the measurement was taken.
  • Country: Country where the measurement was taken.
Auxiliary Weather Data Columns:
  • STATION: Station Number.
  • NAME: Station Name.
  • LATITUDE: Latitude of the station.
  • LONGITUDE: Longitude of the station.
  • ELEVATION: Elevation of the station.
  • DATE: Date of observation.
  • LIQUID_PRECIPITATION: Liquid precipitation.
  • SNOW_DEPTH: Snow depth.
  • DEW: Dew point.
  • EXTREME_AIR_TEMP: Extreme air temperature.
  • ATMOSPHERIC_PRESSURE: Atmospheric pressure.
  • SEA_LEVEL_PRESSURE: Sea level pressure.
  • TEMP: Temperature.
  • VIS: Visibility.
  • WND: Wind conditions.

Distribution

The primary data file, south-korean-pollution-data.csv, is provided in CSV format and is approximately 2.78 MB in size. It contains 13 columns and 34,500 records of pollution measurements. The date range for the pollution data spans from 31 December 2013 to 20 February 2022. Auxiliary weather data is also available to complement the pollution measurements.

Usage

This dataset is ideal for various applications, including:
  • Air quality forecasting: Developing models to predict future pollution levels.
  • Environmental research: Analysing trends and patterns in South Korean air pollution.
  • Public health studies: Investigating the impact of pollution on health and informing public health advisories.
  • Urban planning: Guiding policy decisions related to environmental management and urban development.
  • Meteorological analysis: Studying the correlation between weather conditions and pollutant concentrations.
  • Time series analysis: Examining temporal variations in environmental metrics.

Coverage

The dataset focuses on South Korea, with measurements recorded across various cities and districts. Geographic coordinates (Latitude and Longitude) are provided for each pollution measurement point. The temporal scope of the data extends from 31 December 2013 to 20 February 2022, offering nearly a decade of observations. While the data itself doesn't contain individual demographic information, it is highly relevant for understanding environmental impacts on the general population, especially vulnerable groups like the elderly or individuals with pre-existing medical conditions who are particularly affected by high pollution levels.
