About

Presents the annual percentage growth rate of the world population, tracked yearly across more than six decades. This resource provides detailed historical population dynamics, including data for individual countries, various regional groupings, and categories defined by financial status. It serves as a foundational source for understanding demographic shifts on a global scale.

Columns

The data file contains 64 fields detailing geographic entities and their annual growth rates:
  • country_name: The specific country, territory, or financial/regional grouping being reported.
  • country_code: The respective code assigned to the country or region.
  • 1961 through 2022: A separate column for each year, recording the annual population growth rate expressed as a percentage.

Distribution

The data is delivered in a CSV file format. It features 64 columns in total and includes records for 265 unique countries and regions. The temporal granularity is yearly, spanning the full period from 1961 to 2022. Note that while 265 entities are tracked, a very small number of data points are occasionally missing in the earliest years (1961–1991).

Usage

This data product is suited for in-depth demographic analysis, statistical modelling of long-term population trends, and researching historical impacts of major global events or policies on national growth rates. It is also suitable for visualising long-term global and regional demographic divergence.

Coverage

The geographic scope is global, encompassing population growth data for all countries around the globe, as well as several sub-categories related to financial status. The temporal coverage begins in 1961 and continues annually up to 2022.
