About

Weather indicators recorded daily in the airports of Berlin, New York, and Sydney, spanning fifty years. The data was meticulously gathered from precise airport collection points, originally intended for analysis in an applied data representation course, but expanded to offer diverse continental climate samples. This collection focuses on essential meteorological variables, providing a robust time-series resource for studying long-term climate dynamics and trends.

Columns

  • INDEX: Record number identifier.
  • STATION: The unique code identifying the specific weather station.
  • NAME: The full name of the airport station and its geographic location (e.g., BERLIN SCHONEFELD, GM).
  • LATITUDE: The geographical latitude, expressed in decimal degrees.
  • LONGITUDE: The geographical longitude, expressed in decimal degrees.
  • ELEVATION: The station's altitude above mean sea level, measured in tenths of metres.
  • DATE: The date of the daily observation.
  • PRCP: Daily precipitation volume, measured in millimetres.
  • SNWD: Daily snow depth, measured in millimetres (Note: records for Sydney are mostly absent due to climate).
  • TMAX: The maximum air temperature recorded for the day, in Celsius.
  • TMIN: The minimum air temperature recorded for the day, in Celsius.

Distribution

The data is structured into three separate CSV files, one dedicated to each of the covered cities. Each file maintains an identical structure, comprising an index column plus ten data columns. The file sizes are uniform, reflecting the equivalent length of the fifty-year period captured for each location.

Usage

This data product is perfectly suited for academic research and applied data science relating to climate science. Ideal applications include:
  • Analysing historical climate volatility and identifying regional temperature trends.
  • Conducting long-term time-series analysis of precipitation and snow events.
  • Developing and testing models for regional climate forecasting.
  • Creating geographical visualisations of meteorological extremes across different continents.

Coverage

The data covers a substantial historical period, starting on 1 January 1971 and concluding on 31 December 2020. The geographic scope includes major airport stations located in Berlin (Germany), New York (United States), and Sydney (Australia). This allows for cross-continental comparison between weather patterns in Europe, North America, and Australia.
