About
This collection provides publicly available information detailing the fleet of SpaceX-owned satellites. It offers a gentle introduction to data concerning their space work, making details about their orbital assets more accessible. The vast majority of records within this file pertain specifically to the Starlink satellite constellation. The information has been extracted and thoroughly cleaned, primarily relying on data publicly released by the Union of Concerned Scientists (UCS).
Columns
The dataset contains 22 informational fields providing specific details about each satellite:
- Satellite ID (Fake): A unique identifier assigned to each satellite record.
- Current Official Name of Satellite: The name under which the satellite is officially known to the public.
- Country/Org of UN Registry: The manufacturing organisation location, which is exclusively the USA.
- Country of Operator/Owner: The location of the operating organisation, uniformly listed as the USA.
- Users: Classification of the intended user group, designated as Commercial.
- Class of Orbit: The orbital altitude, identified solely as LEO (Low Earth Orbit).
- Type of Orbit: The specific trajectory, listed as Non-Polar Inclined.
- Longitude of GEO (degrees): Longitude information (zero for non-GEO satellites).
- Perigee (km): The nearest point of the satellite's orbit to Earth, ranging from 301 km to 569 km.
- Apogee (km): The furthest point of the satellite's orbit from Earth, ranging from 311 km to 571 km.
- Eccentricity: Measure of the orbit's shape.
- Inclination (degrees): The angle of the orbit relative to the Earth's equator, generally around 53.0 degrees.
- Period (minutes): The time required for the satellite to complete one orbit, averaging 94.5 minutes.
- Launch Mass (kg.): The mass of the satellite at the time of launch, spanning 227 kg to 260 kg.
- Date of Launch: The precise date the satellite was launched.
- Expected Lifetime (yrs.): The estimated operational duration, listed as 4 years when available.
- Contractor: The organisation responsible for management (SpaceX).
- Country of Contractor: The nation where the managing organisation is located.
- Launch Site: The location from which the satellite was launched (Cape Canaveral).
- Launch Vehicle: The rocket used to place the satellite into orbit (Falcon 9).
- COSPAR Number: The international designator identifier.
- NORAD Number: The catalogue number assigned by USSC.
Distribution
The information is delivered in a standard CSV file format, weighing approximately 167.86 kB. It contains 902 valid records relating to different satellites. While most fields exhibit 100% data validity, the Expected Lifetime field has missing values for 67% of the records. This database is anticipated to be updated on a quarterly basis.
Usage
This data product is ideally suited for performing exploratory data analysis (EDA) focused on satellite constellations and space infrastructure. It can be utilised to derive significant conclusions regarding the deployment, orbital characteristics, and growth trajectory of the Starlink network, given the high concentration of Starlink records included.
Coverage
The satellite details cover launches that occurred between May 2019 and November 2020. Geographically, the data pertains to assets registered, owned, and operated entirely by the USA, with launches originating from Cape Canaveral. The scope is specifically limited to SpaceX-owned assets.
