About

This collection contains the public records of accessioned artworks from the Carnegie Museum of Art (CMOA), released to celebrate the museum's 120th anniversary. It incorporates data for approximately 28,269 objects, spanning departments such as fine arts, decorative arts, photography, contemporary art, and the Heinz Architectural Center. Additionally, the metadata for the Teenie Harris Archive, encompassing roughly 59,031 records, is included, using an identical structure and format. The data is provided without restrictions, encouraging exploration, education, and experimentation. Users are advised that the museum continually researches its collections, meaning the data may contain errors or incomplete entries and is subject to regular updates to reflect the current best understanding of the objects.

Distribution

The data is made available in two primary formats: CSV dumps (cmoa.csv and teenie.csv) and JSON dumps (cmoa.json and teenie.json), with the data content being identical across formats. For bulk usage, the CMOA portion contains records for 28,269 works, while the Teenie Harris Archive records total approximately 59,031. For simpler use, individual JSON files are also provided for each work, named using the GUID portion of the object's ID. An index.json file is also included, listing the ID, title, and first image link (if available) for each object. Be aware that text fields like provenance, medium, and credit line may include newline characters.

Usage

This data is perfectly suited for cultural exploration, educational projects, and experimental data visualisations. It can be used for replicating and further exploring presentations and interpretations of the museum's data. Users can leverage the records to analyse acquisition timelines, study trends in the materials (medium) used, or investigate the representation of artists by nationality and creation date.

Coverage

The dataset covers the accessioned collections of the Carnegie Museum of Art located in Pittsburgh, PA, USA. The timeframe for object creation is extensive, spanning many centuries, while object acquisition dates range from at least November 1896 up to December 2016. The majority of included records are categorized under Fine Arts. Artists listed frequently are of American nationality, which accounts for nearly half of the available nationality data.
