About
Data collected from the Great American Coffee Taste Test, a public survey hosted in October 2023 on YouTube by world champion barista James Hoffmann and coffee company Cometeer. The data provides granular insights into consumer coffee preferences, consumption habits, expertise ratings, and specific taste evaluations (bitterness, acidity, personal preference) across four distinct coffee samples (A, B, C, and D). This information was later analysed by data blogger Robert McKeon Aloe.
Columns
The dataset contains 57 variables detailing participant demographics and coffee-specific responses. Key characteristics captured include:
- Demographics: Submission ID, age, gender, education level, ethnicity/race, employment status, number of children, and political affiliation.
- Consumption Habits: Daily cups consumed, where coffee is typically drunk, home brewing methods used (e.g., Pour over, Aeropress), and purchase locations.
- Preference Details: Favourite coffee drink, whether additions are used (dairy type, sweetener type), preferred coffee style (fruity or chocolatey), strength, roast level (light, medium), and desired caffeine amount.
- Expertise and Spending: Self-rated coffee expertise score, monthly total spend on coffee, reasons for drinking coffee, maximum paid and maximum willing to pay for a single cup, and perceived value of cafe purchases and home equipment investment.
- Taste Test Results: Specific numeric ratings (1-6 scale) for bitterness, acidity, and personal preference, alongside open-ended notes for each of the four tested coffees (Coffee A, Coffee B, Coffee C, Coffee D).
- Overall Preference: Categorical selection of preferred coffee among A, B, and C; A and D; and the overall favourite.
Distribution
The dataset is distributed as a single CSV file named
coffee_survey.csv
. It contains 57 variables and 4042 records, representing the total number of survey submissions analysed. All 4042 records are valid submissions, and the file size is approximately 2.19 MB. Data types include character/categorical responses and numeric ratings.Usage
This resource is suitable for market researchers studying specialty coffee trends and consumer behaviour. It is ideal for correlating demographic segmentation (such as age, employment, or political affiliation) with specific coffee preparation methods or taste preferences. The data can also be used for analysing the perceived value of cafe coffee purchases and investment in home brewing equipment.
Coverage
Data collection occurred during October 2023, capturing responses related to the taste test event. The demographic scope is primarily represented by younger adults (49% are 25-34 years old) with a Bachelor's degree (44%). Participants are mostly male (62%) and predominantly White/Caucasian (65%). The data originates from a YouTube survey open to viewers of the tasting event, raising questions about whether participants are fully representative of Americans in general.
