About
This dataset presents average car prices in Brazil, spanning from January 2021 to January 2023. The data is derived from FIPE, which calculates and updates this information monthly. Each entry in the dataset represents an average car price for a specific car model in a given month and year. It offers a valuable resource for analysing how factors such as car age and engine size influence average vehicle prices in the Brazilian market.
Columns
- year_of_reference: The year corresponding to the observation.
- month_of_reference: The month corresponding to the observation, indicating when the average price was calculated by FIPE.
- fipe_code: A unique identifier for each car model, used for easy searching on the FIPE webpage.
- authentication: A unique code that authenticates a consultation on FIPE's site.
- brand: The car's make.
- model: A detailed description of the car, including its name and other descriptive information from the FIPE table.
- fuel: The type of fuel the car uses. It's noted that some cars listed as Gasoline might be totalflex (alcohol and gas), which is common in Brazil.
- gear: The type of gear shifting mechanism. If 'Aut.' is not present in the model description, the car is presumed to be manual.
- engine_size: The engine capacity measured in cubic centimetres. This information was extracted from the 'model' column. Note that some model values lacked engine size information, leading to partial data.
- year_model: The year of the car's model. This may differ from the year of manufacture. If
year_model
equalsyear_of_reference
, it signifies a brand new car for that specific reference year and month. - avg_price_brl: The average price of the car model, as determined by FIPE, expressed in Brazilian Reais (BRL).
- age_years: The calculated age of the car in years, determined by subtracting
year_model
from 2023.
Distribution
The dataset is typically provided in CSV format and contains approximately 290,000 observations across 12 columns, with a file size of 32.35 MB. Each row represents a monthly average car price for a specific vehicle model. FIPE updates this information every month.
Usage
This dataset is suitable for various applications, including:
- Analysing the relationship between car age and average prices.
- Investigating the impact of engine size on average car prices.
- Developing predictive models for car prices using FIPE's data.
- Building time series analyses to explore price trends based on engine size and gear type.
- Scaling prices against Brazil's minimum wage for period-wise analysis.
- Comparing FIPE's average prices with real store data to compute independent averages.
Coverage
The dataset focuses on car prices in Brazil. It covers average prices from January 2021 to January 2023, though the
year_model
variable can range from 1985 to 2023, with car ages spanning 0 to 38 years. Data is collected monthly. The fuel types include Gasoline (82%), Diesel (16%), and Other (2%), with many gasoline cars being bi-fuel (alcohol and gas). Gear types are predominantly manual (72%), with automatic cars making up 28%. The dataset features 86 unique car brands, with GM - Chevrolet and VW - VolksWagen being the most common. It's worth noting that the dataset does not include all original FIPE data, specifically for models where engine size information was unavailable.License
