About
Recorded prices for gold, silver, and platinum spanning multiple decades. The dataset provides detailed historical price points across three major global currencies—US Dollars, British Pounds, and Euros—without any pre-applied conversion. This highly accurate real-world data set is essential for advanced financial analysis, economic modeling, and investigating market correlations between currencies and precious metals.
Columns
The data is structured consistently across the files for each metal. The columns include the recording date and prices measured in both ounces (oz) and kilograms (kg) for three distinct currencies.
- Date: The date and time of the recording, specified in GMT format.
- {metal}_oz_usd_price: Price of the metal in US Dollars per ounce.
- {metal}_kg_usd_price: Price of the metal in US Dollars per kilogram.
- {metal}_oz_gbp_price: Price of the metal in British Pounds per ounce.
- {metal}_kg_gbp_price: Price of the metal in British Pounds per kilogram.
- {metal}_oz_eur_price: Price of the metal in Euros per ounce.
- {metal}_kg_eur_price: Price of the metal in Euros per kilogram.
Distribution
The data is divided into three separate files in CSV format: one for gold, one for silver, and one for platinum. The files track daily prices over the extended period. While the specific number of records varies slightly between files due to coverage differences, the data is routinely updated on a monthly basis.
Usage
This data set is suitable for various applications, including:
- Investigating the correlation coefficients between different global currencies and the value of precious metals.
- Conducting economic research into historical pricing stability and market influences.
- Analysing historical market dynamics, such as determining periods when silver prices may have been influenced by gold prices.
- Backtesting investment strategies focusing on commodity trading and hedging.
Coverage
The data generally covers the period from 1969 through to 2024.
- Time Range: 1969–2024 (although specific metals and currencies have narrower ranges).
- Geographic Scope: Global prices denominated in USD, GBP, and EUR.
- Specific Notes: The recording of platinum prices began later than gold and silver, as it was officially traded later. Euro prices are available exclusively from 1999 onwards, coinciding with the establishment of the currency. Data prior to 1999 will display missing values for EUR measurements.
