About

This dataset provides insights into the prices of tortillas in Mexico from 2007 to approximately 2025. Tortillas are a staple food in Mexico, made primarily from milled corn and water. The data, originally collected by Mexico's national System of Information and Market Integration and published by Mexico's Bureau of Economic Affairs, has been compiled into an accessible format. It captures price information from 53 cities, encompassing data from 384 mom-and-pop stores and 120 larger retail stores across the country. The dataset aims to highlight the importance of food price monitoring and its influence on daily life, particularly noting differences in pricing between smaller, local stores and big retailers, and how this disparity has evolved, especially since the COVID-19 pandemic.

Columns

  • State: The Mexican state where the surveyed city is situated. All 32 states of Mexico are included.
  • City: Major cities within Mexico where tortilla prices were observed.
  • Year: The year corresponding to the price observation.
  • Month: The month corresponding to the price observation (1-12).
  • Day: The day of the month corresponding to the price observation (1-31).
  • Store type: Indicates whether the surveyed prices originated from a 'Mom and Pop Store' or a 'Big Retail Store'.
  • Price per kilogram: An estimated mean price for one kilogram of tortillas in Mexican pesos ($MXN), specific to the store type, day, and city surveyed.

Distribution

The dataset is provided as a CSV file named tortilla_prices.csv, with a file size of 15.93 MB. It contains over 300,000 records, each representing the mean price observed on a specific day, in a particular city, and within a certain state. The dataset is structured with 7 distinct columns.

  • Analysing the socio-economic impact of staple food costs on Mexican households.

  • Investigating price disparities between different retail channels (mom-and-pop stores versus large retailers).
  • Supporting economic research on food security and market dynamics in Mexico.

Coverage

The dataset covers all 32 states across Mexico, with prices surveyed in 53 major cities. The time range spans from 2007 to approximately 2025. It includes data from both mom-and-pop stores (often catering to lower-income individuals) and large retail chains, offering a broad perspective on tortilla pricing across different consumer segments.
