This dataset presents an automatically updated collection of international men's football match results, dating back to 1872. It was created to address shortcomings in existing historical football data, providing a meticulously gathered and corrected record of nearly 50,000 international matches. The dataset aims to be the definitive source for those seeking extensive historical international football outcomes, offering daily updates to ensure its continued relevance and accuracy. It includes results solely from national teams affiliated with a continental confederation.

Columns

The dataset is primarily composed of all_matches.csv, which contains the following columns:
  • date: The date when the match was played. If the exact date is unknown, it defaults to 31/12 or the last day of the month if the month is known.
  • home_team: The name of the national team playing at home.
  • away_team: The name of the national team playing away.
  • home_score: The full-time score for the home team, including any goals from extra time but excluding penalty-shootouts.
  • away_score: The full-time score for the away team, including any goals from extra time but excluding penalty-shootouts.
  • tournament: The official name of the tournament in which the match was played.
  • country: The name of the country where the match physically took place.
  • neutral: A TRUE/FALSE indicator specifying whether the match was played at a neutral venue.
Additionally, countries_names.csv is included to help match historical team names with current ones:
  • original_name: The country name as it appears in the dataset at the time of the match.
  • current_name: The country name used today, or the name of the country that has inherited the historical record.

Distribution

The dataset is provided in CSV format and includes approximately 50,243 records as of 20 March 2025. The all_matches.csv file has a size of 3.29 MB and consists of 8 columns. The dataset is structured for ease of use, with details on date, participating teams, scores, tournament, and location for each match. Specific numbers for rows or records are available, with the all_matches.csv file containing over 50,000 entries. This dataset is expected to be updated daily.
