This data details privately held startup companies valued at over $1 billion, commonly known as "unicorns". The term was popularised in 2013 by venture capitalist Aileen Lee, representing the statistical rarity of such successful ventures. It offers insights into the valuation, establishment dates, geographical origins, and key investors of these billion-dollar startups. This is a tidied up version of an original dataset found on Kaggle.

Columns

  • Index: A numerical identifier for each entry.
  • Company: The name of the unicorn startup. This column contains 935 unique company names.
  • Valuation ($B): The company's valuation expressed in billions of US dollars, with values ranging from $1 billion up to $140 billion.
  • Date Joined: The date on which the company achieved unicorn status. Dates span from 20th July 2007 to 7th December 2021.
  • Country: The primary country of origin for the startup. There are 45 unique countries represented, with the United States accounting for 51% of entries and China for 18%.
  • City: The city where the startup is based, covering 241 unique locations. San Francisco is the most common with 14%, followed by New York with 9%.
  • Industry: The sector in which the startup operates, with 15 distinct industries. Fintech is the most frequent at 20%, and Internet software & services at 18%.
  • Investor 1: The name of one of the primary investors in the startup. There are 510 unique investor names, with Sequoia Capital China being the most common.
  • Investor 2: The name of a second primary investor, where available. 5% of entries are missing this information. There are 532 unique investor names, with Accel being the most common.
  • Investor 3: The name of a third primary investor, where available. 14% of entries are missing this information. There are 502 unique investor names, with Tiger Global Management being the most common.
  • Investor 4: The name of a fourth primary investor, which is rarely populated, with 99% of entries missing this information. There are 7 unique investor names, with Softbank Group being the most common.

Distribution

The data is provided in a CSV file format, named Unicorn_Clean.csv. It has a file size of 112.56 kB and is structured with 11 distinct columns. Most columns contain data for 936 records, with some investor columns having missing values (e.g., Investor 4 is nearly empty).
