About

This dataset offers a detailed examination of road traffic crashes in Nigeria, covering the period from the fourth quarter of 2020 to the first quarter of 2024. It includes quarterly data on the total number of crashes, injuries, fatalities, and vehicles involved, alongside key contributing factors such as speed violations, driving under the influence, and poor weather conditions. The data is sourced from official traffic records and provides insights into the various elements influencing road safety across Nigeria. It is a valuable resource for understanding accident trends and their impact.

Columns

  • Quarter: The specific quarter in which the data was recorded (e.g., Q4 2020, Q1 2021). This acts as the temporal reference for the dataset.
  • State: The Nigerian state where the road traffic crashes occurred, enabling regional analysis of the data.
  • Total Crashes: The aggregated number of road traffic crashes reported for each state per quarter.
  • Number Injured: The total count of individuals who sustained injuries in road traffic crashes per quarter, providing an indication of crash severity.
  • Number Killed: The total count of fatalities resulting from road traffic crashes per quarter.
  • Total Vehicles Involved: The total number of vehicles implicated in the crashes per quarter, useful for analysing traffic volume and crash rates.
  • Speed Violation (SPV): The number of crashes where exceeding the speed limit was identified as a contributing factor.
  • Driving Under Alcohol/Drug Influence (DAD): The number of crashes attributed to drivers operating vehicles under the influence of alcohol or drugs.
  • Poor Weather (PWR): The number of crashes that occurred during adverse weather conditions, offering insights into environmental risks.
  • Fatigue (FTQ): The number of crashes where driver fatigue was a contributing element, highlighting the role of driver alertness in road safety.

Distribution

The dataset is provided in CSV format, named Nigerian_Road_Traffic_Crashes_2020_2024.csv, and has a size of 21.25 kB. It contains 10 columns and 518 records. The data is structured with quarterly entries for each Nigerian state, and the dataset is not expected to receive further updates.
