About

Daily and total testing metrics for COVID-19 are aggregated in this file to track the progression of testing programmes globally. Collected daily from the Our World in Data GitHub repository, the information is merged into a single file to facilitate country-level analysis. This resource allows for the assessment of pandemic monitoring efforts, enabling users to answer questions regarding which nations are testing most extensively and how positive rates are evolving over time across different geographies.

Columns

  • Entity: The country for which the testing information is provided, or the type of counting unit used (e.g., people tested, tests performed).
  • ISO Code: The standard ISO code representing the specific country.
  • Date: The date of the data entry.
  • Source URL: The specific source for the daily data within the country (usually a public site).
  • Source Label: A human-readable title of the entity providing the information (e.g., Ministry of Health).
  • Notes: Any explanatory notes relevant to the collected data for that entry.
  • Daily change in cumulative total: The number of new tests recorded for that specific date and country.
  • Cumulative total: The total number of tests performed up to that date for the specific country.
  • Cumulative total per thousand: The cumulative number of tests per thousand people in the population.
  • Daily change in cumulative total per thousand: The daily number of tests per thousand people in the population.
  • 7-day smoothed daily change: The averaged value of the daily change in the number of tests for the current date.
  • 7-day smoothed daily change per thousand: The averaged value of daily changes in tests per thousand people.
  • Short-term positive rate: The averaged positive rate for tests over a short period.
  • Short-term tests per case: The averaged number of tests conducted per confirmed case over a short period.

Distribution

The data is provided in a CSV format (covid-testing.csv) with a file size of approximately 13.13 MB. It contains 14 columns and roughly 74,000 valid entries. The dataset structure includes text, date-time, and numerical values, with an expected update frequency of daily.

Usage

  • Comparative Analysis: Determine which countries conduct the most tests and identifying where testing programmes are improving over time.
  • Trend Monitoring: Analyse where and when positive rates are increasing or decreasing.
  • Correlation Studies: Combine this information with daily vaccination data, COVID-19 variant evolution, or confirmed case numbers to understand correlations between testing, incidence, and immunisation.
  • Socio-economic Impact: Integrate demographic and development data (such as income, healthcare services, and education) to see if these factors correlate with testing efficiency.

Coverage

  • Geographic: The dataset covers 142 unique entities (countries/regions), with commonly represented countries including Mexico, Italy, and Poland.
  • Temporal: The data spans from January 2020 through to December 2021.
  • Demographic: The metrics include per-capita adjustments (per thousand people) to allow for fair comparisons across populations of different sizes.

Who Can Use It

  • Data Scientists and Kagglers: For building visualisation dashboards or predictive models regarding pandemic trajectories.
  • Public Health Researchers: To study the relationship between testing density and virus containment.
  • Policy Analysts: To assess the effectiveness of national health strategies in different development contexts.
