About

A survey exploring the habits and beliefs surrounding face mask usage among young adults. This dataset was originally assembled by an AP Statistics class as an exercise to teach survey methodology and analysis using R. The study aimed to understand the perspectives, habits, and underlying reasons young adults have regarding face masks. The participants are AP Statistics students attending various schools within the US, providing focused demographic insight into this population during September 2020.

Distribution

The data is structured as a CSV file, named MaskBeliefs.csv, with a file size of approximately 8.8 kB. It contains 10 attributes across 107 records. The dataset reflects responses collected over a tight timeframe, spanning from 25 September 2020 to 29 September 2020. All columns are accounted for, though minor missing values exist in the Gender (1%) and Restaurant (2%) fields.

Usage

This data is ideally suited for educational purposes, particularly in coursework focused on statistics, data science, and survey methodology. It provides a real-world case study for practising data cleaning, statistical analysis, and hypothesis testing using tools such as R. Researchers may also utilise this information to examine social behaviours, analyse young adult attitudes towards public health interventions, and study factors like dining frequency or interaction with vulnerable populations as predictors of mask habits.

Coverage

The data collection is confined geographically to students in schools across the US. The time period is very brief, covering responses submitted between 25 September 2020 and 29 September 2020. The dataset is static and has an expected update frequency of 'Never'. Demographically, the focus is exclusively on young adults aged 12 to 18 who are enrolled in AP Statistics classes. A majority of respondents reported being female (54%) and boarding students (58%).
