About

This dataset offers a continually updated record of the Coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic globally. It consolidates key metrics such as confirmed cases, deaths, hospitalisation and intensive care unit (ICU) admissions, testing figures, and vaccination progress across numerous countries. Additionally, it includes data on disease reproduction rates and government policy responses. The dataset serves as a vital resource for understanding the spread, impact, and management of the pandemic, providing a detailed view of public health trends and societal responses.

Columns

  • iso_code: Three-letter country codes (ISO 3166-1 alpha-3). OWID-defined regions like continents have 'OWID_' prefix.
  • continent: The continent of the geographical location.
  • location: The geographical location, typically a country or region.
  • date: The date of observation for the data.
  • population: The latest available population figures for the location.
  • total_cases: The cumulative number of confirmed COVID-19 cases, including probable cases where reported.
  • new_cases_smoothed: The 7-day smoothed average of new confirmed COVID-19 cases.
  • total_deaths: The cumulative number of deaths attributed to COVID-19, including probable deaths where reported.
  • new_deaths_smoothed: The 7-day smoothed average of new deaths attributed to COVID-19.
  • icu_patients: The number of COVID-19 patients in intensive care units on a given day.
  • hosp_patients: The number of COVID-19 patients in hospitals on a given day.
  • total_tests: The cumulative number of tests conducted for COVID-19 (note: new datapoints for this metric ceased on 23 June 2022).
  • positive_rate: The share of COVID-19 tests that are positive, presented as a rolling 7-day average.
  • total_vaccinations: The cumulative number of COVID-19 vaccination doses administered.
  • people_fully_vaccinated: The cumulative number of people who have received all doses prescribed by the initial vaccination protocol.
  • total_boosters: The cumulative number of COVID-19 vaccination booster doses administered.
  • stringency_index: A composite measure (0-100) reflecting the strictness of government responses, based on indicators like school closures, workplace closures, and travel bans.
  • reproduction_rate: A real-time estimate of the effective reproduction rate (R) of COVID-19.
  • human_development_index: A composite index measuring average achievement in three basic dimensions of human development: a long and healthy life, knowledge, and a decent standard of living.

Distribution

The dataset is available in CSV, XLSX, and JSON formats. For the CSV and XLSX files, data is structured with one row per location and date, providing a time series for each geographical entity. The JSON version is organised by country ISO code, containing static variables and an array of daily records. The dataset is updated daily, although specific components such as testing data stopped receiving new datapoints on 23 June 2022, and vaccination data is updated on weekdays only. While an exact file size fluctuates, the dataset is substantial given its global and temporal coverage.

Usage

This dataset is an invaluable tool for a wide array of applications. It can be used for epidemiological research to track disease progression and transmission dynamics, public health policy analysis to evaluate the effectiveness of government interventions, and economic impact studies assessing the pandemic's effects on societies worldwide. Researchers can leverage it for geographical comparisons of cases, deaths, and vaccination rates, while data scientists and modellers can use it to build predictive models or visualise global trends. Journalists and educators can utilise it to inform the public and students about the ongoing health crisis.

Coverage

The dataset provides global coverage, encompassing all countries and various regions worldwide. It includes data for 219 countries for confirmed cases and deaths, 218 for vaccinations, 193 for tests (though updates ceased), 46 for hospital and ICU data, and 185 for policy responses. The time range spans the entire duration of the COVID-19 pandemic, with historical data maintained and updated daily, except for certain metrics like testing. Demographic insights are facilitated through included variables such as population, median age, proportions of older populations, GDP per capita, and life expectancy, allowing for detailed analyses across different population groups.
