Columns
- Store_ID: An identifier for the retail outlet or vendor where the data was collected.
- ID: A unique identifier for each record.
- Round: Denotes the specific data collection round.
- Fieldworker_Code: An identifier for the individual fieldworker who collected the data.
- Country: The country where the cigarette price data was recorded.
- Currency: The local currency used for the reported price.
- Day: The day of the month when the data was collected.
- Month: The month when the data was collected.
- Year: The year when the data was collected.
- Date: The exact date of data collection.
- Province: The province within the country where the data was collected (e.g., Khomas, Harare).
- City: The city where the data was collected (e.g., Maseru, Windhoek).

- Outlet_Type: Categorisation of the sales point, such as 'Retail' or 'Street Vendor'.
- Retail_Subtype: A more specific categorisation for retail outlets, including 'Grocery Store' or 'Not Applicable'.
- Outlet_Name: The name of the outlet, often redacted.
- Product: The type of product, predominantly 'Cigarettes', but also includes 'Hookah Tobacco'.
- Brand: The brand of the cigarette product (e.g., Peter Stuyvesant, Dunhill).
- Sub_Brand: Further specification of the brand, such as 'Menthol' or 'Blue'.
- Quantity: The quantity of the product associated with the price.
- Unusual_Quantity_Flg: A flag indicating if the quantity recorded is unusual.
- Local_Price: The price of the product in local currency.
- Local_Price_Per_Stick_Cigarette: The price per cigarette stick in local currency.
- Dollar_Exchange_Rate: The exchange rate to the US dollar at the time of data collection.
- Dollar_Price: The price of the product converted to US dollars.
- Dollar_Price_Per_Stick_Cigarett: The price per cigarette stick converted to US dollars.
- Dollar_Price_Pack_Cigarettes: The price of a pack of cigarettes converted to US dollars.
- Fieldworker_Comment: Any comments provided by the fieldworker, often null or related to grams.
- Data_Cleaner_Comment: Comments from data cleaners, such as notes on exchange rate sources.
Distribution
The dataset is provided in a CSV format, with a file size of 45.92 MB. It contains 28 columns and approximately 215,000 valid records for most variables. Some variables may have slightly fewer valid entries or a small percentage of missing values. The data spans multiple collection rounds.

The study includes data from several African countries, specifically: Botswana, Cameroon, Chad, Eswatini, Ethiopia, Ghana, Kenya, Lesotho, Madagascar, Malawi, Mauritius, Mozambique, Namibia, Nigeria, South Africa, Tanzania, Uganda, Zambia, and Zimbabwe. It is noted that not all countries are covered in every data collection round. The data collection period spans from 2016 to 2022, with specific dates ranging from 14 January 2016 to 16 August 2022. The most common country represented is South Africa.
