About

Publicly available data tracking the impact of COVID-19 across the United States, detailed at the state and county level. This dataset provides essential metrics, including cumulative case counts and fatalities, designed to support regional analysis and public health studies. It originates from the New York Times' official public data repository on GitHub.

Columns

The dataset contains six key fields for analysis:
  • date: The calendar date corresponding to the reported metrics. The date range in the sample spans approximately one month from late February 2023 to late March 2023.
  • county: Identifies the specific county where the figures were recorded. The sample indicates a large number of unique counties (1932 unique entries) are represented.
  • state: Identifies the state. Texas and Georgia are among the most frequently occurring states in the records.
  • fips: The Federal Information Processing Standards code, which serves as a unique geographic identifier. Note that 1% of these identifiers are missing in the current sample records.
  • cases: The total number of confirmed COVID-19 cases accumulated up to the specified date. Case values range significantly, reaching up to 3.72 million in the observed data.
  • deaths: The total number of deaths attributed to the coronavirus. Approximately 2% of the death count entries are missing in the available records.

Distribution

This dataset is structured in a clear tabular format, typically provided as a CSV file named us-counties-recent.csv, which has a file size of 4.22 MB. It comprises over 97,000 valid records in the sample, detailing daily counts by location. The data product is generally updated on a weekly basis, ensuring reasonably current statistics are available.

Usage

This data product is ideally suited for exploratory data analysis concerning pandemic trends, creating detailed data visualisations of viral spread, and building epidemiological models. Researchers can use it to perform granular comparisons between states and counties regarding infection rates and mortality figures. It is also suitable for journalistic endeavours seeking reliable, public domain statistics for news reporting.

Coverage

The dataset focuses exclusively on US data, providing granular coverage at both the state and county administrative levels. The geographic scope includes 56 unique state identifiers. While the dataset covers the entire US, specific availability notes indicate minor gaps in the fips identifier and deaths counts, with up to 2% of death figures potentially missing. The time period covered is longitudinal, with recent samples focusing on early 2023.
