About

Presents detailed tracking of COVID-19 virus variant evolution across the world, including strains such as Delta and Omicron. This dataset offers essential context derived from the Our World in Data GitHub repository, providing insights into the dynamics of virus spreading and morphing variants. It holds high significance for public health efforts, allowing users to track how specific variants proliferate globally over time.

Columns

  • location: Identifies the country for which the variants information is recorded.
  • date: The specific date associated with the data entry.
  • variant: Specifies the particular COVID-19 variant corresponding to this entry.
  • num_sequences: The raw count of sequences processed for the specified country, variant, and date combination.
  • perc_sequences: The percentage of sequences corresponding to the specific variant relative to the total sequences processed for that location and date.
  • num_sequences_total: The total number of sequences processed for the given country on the specified date.

Distribution

The data is supplied in CSV format, named covid-variants.csv, and has a file size of 3.86 MB. It features six columns and contains approximately 100,000 records. The structure supports daily updates, allowing sequential monitoring of variant metrics.

Usage

Ideal for tracking the global evolution and proliferation of COVID-19 variants. Users can identify which specific variants are being sequenced in various countries and analyse how they evolve geographically. This data can also be used to assess geographical diversity—where many variants coexist versus locations where only one variant is rapidly proliferating. It is highly valuable when combined with other public health data, such as vaccination records or daily COVID case counts, to follow the complex dynamics of virus spread and intervention effects.

Coverage

The geographical scope includes 121 unique countries worldwide. The temporal coverage spans from 11 May 2020 to 5 January 2022. The data focuses entirely on 24 distinct COVID-19 variants identified globally, with Alpha being noted as the most commonly recorded variant.
