The institutions covered range widely, including Doctoral/Research Universities, Masters Colleges and Universities, Baccalaureate Colleges, Associates Colleges, theological seminaries, medical schools, law schools, and various other specialised institutions (such as those focused on engineering, art, music, design, business, and teaching). The dataset includes features approved by the National Geospatial-Intelligence Agency (NGA) Homeland Security Infrastructure Program (HSIP).

Distribution
The data is provided in a CSV format, titled
us-colleges-and-universities.csv, with a file size of 3.51 MB. It contains 6,559 total records, structured across 45 columns detailing various facility attributes. While geographic point data is fully available, attention should be paid to data sparsity, as some crucial attributes, such as NAME, ADDRESS, and CITY, exhibit high percentages of missing values.Usage
This data product is exceptionally suitable for geospatial analysis, mapping, and infrastructure planning within the United States. It can be used by public sector organisations, particularly those concerned with critical infrastructure identification and security, as the layer is approved under the NGA HSIP initiative. Researchers can utilise the data for institutional studies and geographical distribution analysis of US higher education facilities.
Coverage
The geographic scope includes all 50 US states, Puerto Rico, and various assorted US territories. The temporal scope focuses specifically on data collected for the 2018-2019 school year, based on National Center for Education Statistics (NCES) IPEDS reporting. The scope covers all institutions classified within the IPEDS framework, including degree-granting and specialised entities. This release incorporated updates, including the addition of 175 new records and the removal of 468 records no longer reported by NCES.
