About

Provides critical data for identifying trends in the introduction of nonindigenous aquatic species. These introductions are widely recognized as major stressors on freshwater ecosystems, posing a threat to native endemic biodiversity and leading to damaging impacts on local and regional economies and ecosystem services. Continuous monitoring of spatial and temporal spread is essential for guiding prevention and control efforts, as well as developing effective policies for impact mitigation.

Columns

The data product is structured around two key files: DAT_SPECIES (Information of species) and DAT_SPATIAL (Georeferenced information).
DAT_SPECIES:
  • Occurrence: A unique identification number.
  • Sciname: The scientific name assigned to the species.
  • Kingdom: Denotes the large taxonomic group (e.g., animals or plants).
  • Group: The taxonomy group, provided only for animals.
  • Family: The taxonomy family, provided only for animals.
  • State: The US state where the occurrence was documented.
  • NativeRegion: The continent or region of origin.
  • Centroid: A flag indicating if the location is known to be a centroid.
  • DecimalLat: The original latitude value provided by the source database.
  • DecimalLon: The original longitude value provided by the source database.
  • DateObserved: The date the species was reported as observed.
  • Year: The year of observation, particularly useful if the specific date is unavailable.
  • Collector: The name of the original collector of the specimen.
  • Recorderby: The name of the discover person, used if the collector name is missing.
  • HUC8SkM: The area of HUC8 (Hydrologic Unit Code) measured in square kilometers.
  • HUC10SkM: The area of HUC10 in square kilometers.
  • HUC12SkM: The area of HUC12 in square kilometers.
DAT_SPATIAL:
  • Name: Contains the names of the US states.
  • Geometry: Shape data used for the boundary plot of the states.
  • Iso_code: Codes for the names of the principal state subdivisions.

Distribution

The data files are provided, typically in CSV format. The structure includes two main components: species occurrence information (DAT_SPECIES) and georeferenced state boundary data (DAT_SPATIAL). The DAT_SPATIAL file contains 50 unique records for the names, geometry, and iso_codes of the states across 3 columns. Specific record counts for the DAT_SPECIES file are not specified in the materials. The dataset is not expected to receive future updates.

Usage

  • Can provide significant insights into the historical drivers of species introduction events and assist in forecasting future invasion patterns.
  • Allows users to improve their skills in analysing spatial and temporal patterns.
  • Useful for conducting spatiotemporal analysis to gain a fuller understanding of biological spread.

Coverage

The geographic coverage spans the United States of America. The time range for recorded species introductions runs over four centuries, from 1616 to 2016. The dataset includes information on nonindigenous aquatic species, covering both animals and plants.
