A synthesised transaction dataset containing three months’ worth of activity for 100 hypothetical customers. The data simulates realistic transaction behaviours, reflecting patterns observed in real transaction data from a major Australian bank. It includes typical customer financial events such as purchases, recurring debits, and salary credits, making it a robust resource for developing and testing financial models.

Columns (23 Columns)

  • account The customer's unique account number.
  • age The customer's age, with a range from 18 to 78 years.
  • amount The monetary value of the transaction, spanning from 0.1 to 8.84k.
  • authorized Denotes the authorisation status of the transaction (64% are authorised).
  • balance The customer's account balance associated with the transaction, up to 267k.
  • bpay_biller_code Unique code for BPay transactions (93% are missing).
  • card_present_flag Indicates if a physical card was used for the transaction.
  • country The location of the transaction, exclusively Australia.
  • currency The currency used, which is the Australian Dollar (AUD).
  • customer_id The unique identifier for each customer.
  • date The exact date the transaction occurred, spanning three months.
  • extraction The date the transaction data was extracted.
  • first_name The first name of the hypothetical customer.
  • gender The customer's gender (Male or Female).
  • long_lat Geographical coordinates of the transaction's location.
  • merchant_code A unique code identifying the merchant (93% are missing).
  • merchant_id The identifier for the merchant involved.
  • merchant_long_lat Geographical coordinates of the merchant's location.
  • merchant_state The Australian state of the merchant (NSW is the most frequent).
  • merchant_suburb The district or locality of the merchant.
  • movement Specifies the transaction type: debit (93%) or credit (7%).
  • status Denotes the overall status of the transaction.
  • txn_description The mode of transaction, such as SALES-POS or POS.

Distribution

The data is provided in a CSV file named anz.csv, with a file size of 2.73 MB. The structure contains 23 fields detailing individual transactions. There are approximately 12,000 valid records in total. This is a static dataset, and the expected update frequency is never. The minimum transaction amount recorded is 0.1.

Usage

This financial dataset is ideally suited for various analytical objectives, including Exploratory Data Analysis and Data Visualization. It supports research into customer spending habits and is designed for use in modules requiring Data Cleaning and validation exercises.
