About

Focuses on identifying fake and true news concerning the Russo-Ukrainian war. The dataset contains approximately 10,700 news headlines collected from Ukrainian news channels and Russian disinformation channels. This data covers the initial period of the full-scale conflict and serves as a significant, open-source collection intended primarily for text classification and Machine Learning model training related to information warfare.

Columns

  • Text: Provides the headline or title of the news story. There are over 10,600 unique text entries.
  • Label: A boolean indicator specifying the veracity of the news: True signifies approved news, and False signifies fabricated (fake) news. The majority of the entries (8,237) are labelled True, while 2,498 entries are labelled False.

Distribution

The dataset contains approximately 10,700 total records. It is structured to be distributed, usually in CSV format, with two primary files available. The file named data_set_4.csv is the cleaner version, containing fewer than 20 unusable news items, while news_data.csv contains about 1,000 unusable entries. The data_set_4.csv file size is around 2.46 MB.

Usage

Ideal for developing classification models aimed at distinguishing genuine news from disinformation. It can be utilised for academic research projects studying propaganda techniques, media analysis during conflict, and training AI models for news verification services.

Coverage

The content is specifically derived from Ukrainian news sources and channels that spread Russian fake news. The temporal scope spans from the start of the full-scale conflict, 24 February 2022, through to 11 December 2022. The data focuses exclusively on headlines related to the Russo-Ukrainian war.
