About
A detailed dataset displaying user activity on major social media platforms. The data was generated to simulate real-world usage patterns across 13 popular global platforms, including Facebook, YouTube, WhatsApp, and TikTok. It offers crucial insights into user demographics, engagement levels, and usage habits, functioning as a privacy-friendly alternative for advanced analytics, research, and machine learning initiatives.
Columns
- Platform: The name of the specific social media platform where user activity is monitored, encompassing globally recognised entities such as Reddit and Instagram.
- Owner: The company or entity responsible for the operation of the platform, with examples including Meta and Google.
- Primary Usage: Identifies the main function or purpose of the platform, which could range from messaging to discussion forums and communities.
- Country: The geographical region where the user is situated, simulating global coverage with 243 unique values for analysis of regional behaviour variances.
- Daily Time Spent (min): Tracks the amount of time a user spends on the platform daily, measured in minutes. The simulated average time spent is 152 minutes.
- Verified Account: A boolean field indicating whether the user possesses a verified account, mimicking enhanced status patterns found in real-world social media usage.
- Date Joined: The date the user registered for or started using the platform, providing data on account history, user retention, and platform growth over time.
Distribution
This synthetic data product includes 10,000 records, or rows, suitable for analysis. It is typically supplied in a CSV file format and consists of 7 key fields. The structure is carefully designed based on industry reports and aims to accurately represent varied user activity levels and backgrounds.
Usage
This data product is ideal for developing, testing, and fine-tuning applications, models, and algorithms without handling sensitive personal information. Specific use cases include:
- Model User Behavior: Analysing engagement metrics like daily time spent and country of origin to predict platform engagement.
- Test Analytics Tools: Using the data to simulate activity and optimise social media monitoring platforms for reporting and visualisation.
- Train Machine Learning Algorithms: Creating models for tasks such as user segmentation, recommendation systems, or predicting user churn.
- Create Dashboards: Establishing a foundation for visualising global user trends, platform comparisons, and engagement patterns.
- Conduct Market Research: Gaining valuable insights into platform preferences and usage behaviours across different demographics and regions.
Coverage
The dataset simulates global geographical coverage, showcasing users from diverse locations globally, represented by 243 unique countries. The time span for simulated account history, reflected in the 'Date Joined' field, runs from May 2015 up to May 2025. It tracks activity across 13 major platforms, providing a broad overview of the digital landscape.
