About

The data explains the performance of journalism globally, detailing the scores nations receive for both the integrity of their information and the safety of their journalists. It is essential for understanding global trends and discerning whether a nation is improving or deteriorating in its commitment to spreading truthful information versus disinformation over the three years covered. The final ranking of a country is determined by a calculated Global Score, where a lower score signifies a better outcome.

Columns

  • Country Name: The identifier for the country, featuring 180 unique values.
  • Abuse Score 2021: A metric evaluated by experts based on the level of violence and abuse targeting journalists within the country. This score is used as a weighting factor when determining the final Global Score; a lower score indicates better conditions. The mean score is 20.8.
  • Underlying Situation Score 2021: A metric determined by experts reflecting the truthfulness and honesty of the information provided by the country's journalists. A lower score suggests a better informational environment. The mean score is 34.6.
  • Global Score 2021: The final calculated index for the country in 2021, derived from the Abuse Score and the Underlying Situation Score. A lower score corresponds to a higher country rank. The mean score is 35.1.
  • Global Score 2020: The final calculated index score for the country from 2020, used for trend analysis. The mean score is 34.8.
  • Global Score 2019: The final calculated index score for the country from 2019, used for trend analysis. The mean score is 35.
