About

This resource contains the authoritative list of sources indexed within the Scopus database, offering essential bibliometric data for the analysis of scholarly publication impact. It provides details for academic journals, book series, trade publications, and conference proceedings that are either directly available on Scopus or accessed via external websites linked through Scopus. The significance of this data lies in its core metrics, including CiteScore, which measures citation impact, SNIP (Source Normalized Impact per Paper), and SJR (SCImago Journal Rank), which gauges citation prestige. The source list itself is updated three times annually.

Columns

The data structure includes key identifiers and quantitative metrics. The file sample reveals structural columns such as:
  • ASJC Code: The numerical code designating the Scopus Sub-subject Area. The data covers 334 valid codes in total.
  • Label: The descriptive name corresponding to the Scopus Sub-subject Area. Examples include 'Archaeology'.
  • Count: Frequency statistics used for internal data grouping and analysis.
For scholarly analysis, the data also contains fields representing:
  • Citation Count: The total citations received over a four-year period for documents published within that same period.
  • Scholarly Output: The sum of documents published by the serial title over the four-year metric window.
  • Quartile: A classification ranking titles based on their CiteScore Percentile (e.g., Quartile 1 represents the top 25% of titles, covering the 99th–75th percentile).

Distribution

The data file is typically provided in a standard structured format, such as CSV. The expected update frequency for this data product is Annually. A sample file, ASJC_code.csv, is 10.7 kB in size and contains statistical breakdowns for the subject area codes. Metrics calculations, such as CiteScore 2019, utilize citation and publication data spanning a four-year window (e.g., 2016-2019). Corrections to the metrics data are usually applied by the end of October.

Usage

This resource is ideally suited for Exploratory Data Analysis and Data Visualization focusing on trends in academic publishing. Users can utilise the metrics to evaluate the performance of journals within their subject field, measure the average citation impact of serial titles, and calculate the Percent Cited—the proportion of documents that receive at least one citation. It is also valuable for benchmarking titles against global peers.

Coverage

The scope covers global academic serial titles available in or through the Scopus system. The dataset encompasses various publication types. Metrics are calculated using a rolling four-year window, ensuring relevance and timely assessment of impact. Sources are included in the list once they reach a threshold of 15 published papers. The data currently details 333 unique sub-subject areas.
