About
This dataset presents a detailed ranking of the best cities and countries for startups during 2021 and 2022. It offers insights into the global startup ecosystem, identifying key locations that foster new businesses. A startup, as defined, is a company or project initiated by an entrepreneur with the intention to seek, develop, and validate a scalable business model, aiming for significant growth beyond a solo founder. While startups inherently face high uncertainty and failure rates, a minority achieve substantial success, sometimes becoming unicorns—privately held companies valued at over US$1 billion. This dataset is invaluable for understanding the landscape of global entrepreneurship and identifying hubs of innovation.
Columns
The dataset comprises nine distinct columns, providing a rich overview of startup ecosystems:
- position: Represents the ranking of a city or country, ranging from 1 to 1000.
- change in position from 2020: Indicates the shift in ranking compared to the previous year (2020). Values include 'new' for newly ranked entities, or numerical changes.
- city: Specifies the name of the city in the ranking. There are 983 unique city entries.
- country: Identifies the country associated with the city. There are 140 unique country entries, with the United States being the most common, followed by the United Kingdom.
- total score: This is a composite score calculated as the sum of the quantity, quality, and business environment scores.
- quantity score: Reflects the activity level of a startup ecosystem. It accounts for metrics such as the number of startups, coworking spaces, and accelerators present.
- quality score: Evaluates the qualitative outcomes achieved by an ecosystem. This includes analysing the traction of its leading startups and reviewing the "special entities" it has produced, such as Unicorns, Exits, and Pantheons.
- business score: Combines various business and economic indicators at the national level, adjusted for cities that have not yet achieved a critical mass in terms of Quantity or Quality scores.
- sign of change in position: Indicates whether a city's position has improved ('+') or declined ('-'). Approximately 20% of entries show no explicit sign, suggesting no change or new entries.

The dataset is provided in a CSV (Comma Separated Values) format, with a file size of 51.2 kB. It contains 9 columns and 1000 records/rows.
