About

This dataset provides a detailed list of carbon dioxide emissions from sovereign states and territories between 1990 and 2017. It is based on data from the EDGAR database, developed by the European Commission and Netherlands Environmental Assessment Agency, released in 2018. The data focuses on CO2 emissions resulting from the burning of fossil fuels and cement manufacture. It is important to note that emissions from land use, land-use change, forestry, and international shipping are not included in these figures. The dataset includes annual CO2 emission estimates in megatonnes, as well as calculated emissions per square kilometre and per capita for the years 1990, 2005, and 2017. It also incorporates information related to the Climate Change Performance Index.

Columns

The dataset contains nine key columns:
  • Country: The name of the sovereign state or territory (213 unique values).
  • Fossil CO2 emissions(Mt CO2) Year 1990: Annual CO2 emissions from fossil fuels and cement in 1990, measured in megatonnes (Mt CO2). Values range from 0.68 to 22,700.
  • Fossil CO2 emissions(Mt CO2) Year 2005: Annual CO2 emissions from fossil fuels and cement in 2005, measured in megatonnes (Mt CO2). Values range from 1.12 to 30,000.
  • Fossil CO2 emissions(Mt CO2) Year 2017: Annual CO2 emissions from fossil fuels and cement in 2017, measured in megatonnes (Mt CO2). Values range from 1.77 to 37,100.
  • Fossil CO2 emissions 2017 World Percentage: The percentage contribution of a country's 2017 fossil CO2 emissions to the global total.
  • 2017 VS 1990 Change: The change in fossil CO2 emissions between 2017 and 1990.
  • 2017 Fossil CO2 emissions Per Land Area (CO2/km2/yr): CO2 emissions per square kilometre in 2017.
  • Per Capita (CO2/cap/yr): CO2 emissions per person in 2017.
  • 2018 CO2 emissions Total Includind LUCF: Total CO2 emissions for 2018, including land use, land-use change, and forestry (note: this column has missing values).

Distribution

This dataset is provided as a CSV file, named List of countries by carbon dioxide emissions.csv, with a size of approximately 13.64 kB. It consists of nine columns, and typically contains data for around 213 records or rows, representing various countries and territories.

Usage

This dataset is ideal for a variety of applications, including:
  • Environmental Research: Analysing historical CO2 emission trends and patterns across different nations.
  • Policy Making: Informing national and international climate change policies and mitigation strategies.
  • Comparative Analysis: Benchmarking countries based on their carbon footprint, emissions per capita, or emissions per land area.
  • Educational Purposes: Supporting studies on global warming, climate science, and environmental statistics.
  • Data Analytics Projects: Utilising the data for visualisations, statistical modelling, and predictive analysis related to climate.

Coverage

  • Geographic Scope: Covers sovereign states and territories worldwide.
  • Time Range: Provides annual CO2 emission estimates for the years 1990, 2005, and 2017. An additional column offers 2018 total CO2 emissions inclusive of land-use changes, though this column has some missing data.
  • Data Specifics: The data primarily considers CO2 emissions from the burning of fossil fuels and cement manufacture. It explicitly excludes emissions from land use, land-use change, forestry, and international shipping (bunker fuels) in the main national figures.

Who Can Use It

This dataset is suitable for:
  • Climate Scientists and Researchers: For in-depth studies of global carbon cycles and anthropogenic impacts.
  • Environmental Policy Analysts: To assess national contributions to global emissions and evaluate policy effectiveness.
  • Government Bodies and NGOs: For reporting, strategic planning, and public awareness campaigns related to climate action.
  • Academics and Students: For coursework, dissertations, and projects on environmental studies, economics, and statistics.
  • Data Journalists: To create informative articles and visualisations on climate change issues.
