About
This geographic dataset provides essential reference points for locations across Malaysia. It is specifically designed to facilitate the creation of an embedded reverse geocoding database and to assist in solving various location-based classification problems. The data lists key geographical entities—States, Districts, and specific Towns—each paired with its corresponding GPS coordinates (latitude and longitude). The data was originally compiled to support a quick and functional localized reverse geocoding tool for a mobile application.
Columns
The dataset contains five columns detailing the Malaysian geographical hierarchy and location data:
- States: Identifies the primary administrative regions within Malaysia. There are 15 unique state entries.
- District: Specifies the secondary administrative divisions located within the identified State. This field contains 144 unique district entries.
- Town: Designates a specific town or city situated within a District. There are 157 unique town entries.
- Lat: The decimal representation of the latitude coordinate for the location point. Values range from 1.01 to 6.92.
- Lon: The decimal representation of the longitude coordinate for the location point. Values range from 99.7 to 119.
Distribution
The dataset is provided in a standard tabular format, packaged as a CSV file named
daerah-working-set.csv, with a size of 65.26 kB. It consists of 1448 valid records and includes 5 distinct columns. Data integrity is high, with no observed mismatched or missing values across the recorded entries.Usage
This data is ideally suited for several geographic and computational applications:
- Building a localized reverse geocoder, potentially using algorithms such as kNN or kd-tree.
- Determining the nearest City, District, or State based on input coordinates.
- Performing various location-based classification experiments.
- Developing internal, embedded location look-up functions for mobile or offline applications.
Coverage
The data provides full geographic scope across Malaysia, covering all major States, associated Districts, and numerous Cities and Towns. The focus is strictly geographical location points. The dataset is expected to be updated Annually.
