About
This dataset provides measured and calculated ocean wave parameters, collected by anchored oceanographic wave measuring buoys off Mooloolaba, Queensland. Covering a 30-month period from early 2017 to late 2019, it offers valuable insights into local wave conditions and sea surface temperatures. The data includes details on significant wave height, maximum wave height, wave periods, peak wave direction, and sea surface temperature.
Columns
- Date/Time: The date and time stamp for each recorded wave measurement.
- Hs: Significant wave height, calculated as the average height of the highest one-third of waves within a given observation period.
- Hmax: The maximum individual wave height recorded during the observation period.
- Tz: The zero upcrossing wave period, representing the average period between successive upward crossings of the mean sea level.
- Tp: The peak energy wave period, which is the period at which the maximum wave energy occurs.
- Peak Direction: The direction, measured relative to true north, from which the peak period waves are arriving.
- SST: An approximation of the sea surface temperature at the location of the buoy.
Distribution
The dataset is provided as a CSV file, specifically named
Coastal Data System - Waves (Mooloolaba) 01-2017 to 06 - 2019.csv
, and has a file size of 2.15 MB. It comprises 7 columns of detailed oceanographic measurements. The dataset contains approximately 43,700 records for wave parameters and sea surface temperature, with 38,500 valid records for the Date/Time column.Usage
This dataset is ideal for various applications, including data visualisation, weather and climate modelling, and supporting industries such as hotels and accommodations through environmental insights. It can be used for coastal engineering projects, maritime safety and navigation planning, environmental monitoring, and in studies related to ocean dynamics and climate change.
Coverage
The data was collected in Mooloolaba, Queensland, Australia. The temporal coverage spans 30 months, specifically from 1st January 2017 to 7th December 2019.
