About

This dataset details prize money awarded in Kaggle competitions, along with information on the participants and teams who achieved top leaderboard finishes. It aims to answer questions regarding the distribution of prize money and the earnings of top Kaggle competitors. The data itemises money awarded for each competition by leaderboard rank, matching it with the respective teams and users at that rank. It captures nearly $16 million in total prize money.

Columns

  • Slug: A unique identifier for the competition, often used in URLs. For example, 'data-science-bowl-2017'.
  • DeadlineDate: The closing date of the competition, recorded in UTC. Dates range from 21st September 2011 to 20th June 2023.
  • TeamPrize: The total prize money awarded to a team for their performance. Values range from £200 to £1 million, with an average of £16,000.
  • CompetitionId: A unique numerical identifier for each Kaggle competition. Values span from 2,496 to 1 million.

Distribution

This dataset is provided as a CSV file, specifically competition_prizewinners.csv, with a size of 250.82 KB. It contains 11 columns. Most columns have 2,280 valid records, while UserId and DisplayName have 2,276 valid records, indicating 4 missing entries for these fields.

Usage

This dataset is ideal for:
  • Analysing prize money distribution patterns across various Kaggle competitions.
  • Identifying and tracking the winnings of top-performing Kagglers and teams.
  • Studying the historical evolution of prize amounts in data science challenges.
  • Investigating team composition and how it correlates with prize winnings.
  • Conducting research on the financial incentives and dynamics within the competitive data science ecosystem.

Coverage

The dataset covers Kaggle competition prize money awarded from September 2011 to June 2023, with the last update on 8th July 2023. It is important to note that coverage prior to 2017 is incomplete due to varying web page formats and prize descriptions. The dataset does not account for milestone prizes, efficiency awards, non-cash prizes, teams in the money zone that did not qualify, or unequal distributions of winnings within teams.
