About

This extensive collection of character statistics and attributes was generated via web scraping to address limitations found in older datasets that only contained information up to the seventh generation. The file provides a solid statistical foundation for analysis, covering 890 standard characters alongside their special variations, including Mega Evolutions, Alolan forms, Galarian forms, and alternate forms introduced in the Sword and Shield DLC and Pokemon Legends Arceus. The creation of this data required significant effort, involving two days of debugging and perfecting the code to access data hidden behind single-page button clicks. Specific flags are included to easily isolate special groups, such as those that are Legendary, Mythical, or Mega-Evolved.

Columns

The dataset includes 40 distinct attributes, providing identification details, physical measurements, and gameplay statistics:
  • pokedex_number: The national identification number for each entry.
  • name: The English name of the character (1033 unique values).
  • generation: The content generation the character belongs to, ranging from 1 to 8.
  • classfication: A text label describing the species type (e.g., 'Mouse Pokemon').
  • abilities: A list detailing all possible abilities the character may possess, including hidden abilities.
  • height_m & weight_kg: Physical measurements of the character in metres and kilograms. The average height is 1.29 metres and the average weight is 78.8 kg.
  • type1 & type2: The primary and secondary elemental typings. Water is the most common primary type, while nearly half (47%) of the entries have no secondary type.
  • base_total: The aggregate sum of all base statistics, with values ranging from 175 to 780.
  • hp, attack, defense, sp_attack, sp_defense, speed: The individual base statistics governing health and battle performance.
  • against_[type]: A series of columns detailing the defence multiplier (resistance or weakness) against all elemental types (e.g., against_fire, against_rock).
  • capture_rate: A metric indicating how easy it is to capture the character in the games, with values ranging from 3 to 255.
  • base_egg_steps: The number of steps required for the character's egg to hatch.
  • base_happiness: The friendship level when the character is caught, ranging from 0 to 140.
  • is_legendary, is_mythical, is_mega: Binary flags (0 or 1) marking special character classifications.

Distribution

The dataset is provided as a CSV file named Pokemon_data.csv, approximately 179.45 kB in size. It contains 1033 records across 40 columns. While the primary attributes (name, stats, generation) are fully populated, certain gameplay metrics, specifically capture_rate, base_happiness, and base_egg_steps, currently contain missing values (NaN) for characters introduced in Pokemon Legends Arceus, as this data is not yet fully available. Updates are anticipated annually.

Usage

This statistical registry is ideal for:
  • Data Visualisation: Creating charts and graphs to illustrate the distribution and means of character statistics across generations.
  • Game Balance Analysis: Studying the correlation between elemental types, defence multipliers, and overall statistical power.
  • Targeted Filtering: Using the binary flags to identify and separate special groups (Legendary, Mythical, Mega) for focused study or exclusion.

Coverage

The data covers eight sequential generations of the fictional franchise, spanning Generation 1 through Generation 8. The population includes 890 base characters and all known alternate forms, such as Mega Evolutions, Galarian, and Alolan variations, as well as forms from the recent DLC content.
