This dataset provides a detailed list of all tangible cultural and natural heritage sites worldwide, as designated by the United Nations Educational, Scientific, and Cultural Organization (UNESCO). World Heritage Sites are areas or landmarks legally protected by an international convention due to their cultural, historical, scientific, or other forms of significance. These sites are considered to be of outstanding value to humanity, representing unique geographical and historical landmarks with special cultural or physical importance. Examples include ancient ruins, historical structures, cities, deserts, forests, islands, monuments, and areas of natural beauty. As of July 2021, the dataset includes 1,155 World Heritage Sites (897 cultural, 218 natural, and 39 mixed properties) spread across 167 countries, with Italy having the most sites on the list.
Columns
- Name: The name of the heritage site or culture.
- short_description: A brief description of the site.
- date_inscribed: The date the site was entered into the heritage list.
- danger: Indicates whether the site is currently classified as in danger.
- date_end: The date when the heritage status ended, possibly due to destruction.
- longitude: The longitudinal coordinate of the site.
- latitude: The latitudinal coordinate of the site.
- area_hectares: The area covered by the site in hectares.
- category_long: The full category of the heritage site (e.g., Cultural, Natural).
- category_short: A short code representing the heritage category (e.g., C for Cultural, N for Natural).
- Country name: The name of the country where the site is located.
- Region: The geographical region of the site.
- iso_code: The ISO code for the country.
- transboundary: Indicates if the site shares a boundary with other nations.
- rev_bis: A suffix used by UNESCO for the site identifier.
