The recipients of India's gallantry awards, honouring the brave individuals of the Indian Forces. It covers both wartime and peacetime awards, providing a record of their remarkable achievements.
Columns
- Number: A numerical identifier for each entry.
- Year: The year the award was conferred.
- Rank: The military rank or title (e.g., Major, Shri) of the award recipient.
- Name: The full name of the awardee.
- Service: The branch of service or organisation the awardee belonged to (e.g., Indian Army, Civilian).
- Posthumously: A boolean value indicating if the award was given after the recipient's death (
true) or not (false).
Distribution
The data is provided in six separate CSV files, corresponding to each of the six gallantry awards: Param Vir Chakra (pvc), Mahavir Chakra (mvc), Vir Chakra (vc), Ashoka Chakra (ac), Kirti Chakra (kc), and Shaurya Chakra (sc). The
ashokachakra.csv file, for example, contains 87 records across 6 columns.Usage
This data is ideal for historical research, data analysis projects, and creating visualisations to honour India's military heroes. It can be used to study trends in awards over time, by service branch, or rank.

The data covers gallantry award winners from India. The time range for the awards varies; for example, the Ashoka Chakra awards in the sample span from 1952 to 2021.
