About

This dataset series aims to transform the traditionally unstructured information within the Holy Bible into a format accessible to modern technology. For millennia, the Bible has been widely read, translated, and examined, yet its data has remained challenging to parse, process, and enrich. This collection of structured datasets facilitates deeper examination and analysis of Scripture. It enables complex queries such as identifying genealogical relationships, calculating time spans between significant events, or listing Biblical occurrences at specific geographical locations. The initiative is inspired by historical figures like James Strong, Orvil Nave, and Roswell Hitchcock, who pioneered efforts to make Biblical information more readily available.

Columns

While a specific original data sample is not provided, the dataset collection includes a variety of structured information points across its numerous files. These data points cover:
  • Unique identifiers for each book, chapter, and verse.
  • Details on the 613 commandments, including chapter and verse references, and related source texts in Hebrew, Greek, and English.
  • Words from the Hebrew Bible, organised by Strong's number.
  • Topical dictionary entries, alphabetically organised by topic.
  • Bible names dictionary entries, alphabetically organised by name.
  • A parallel view of various ancient Bible manuscripts and translations, including World English Bible, King James Version, Leningrad Codex, Jewish Publication Society 1917, Codex Alexandrinus, Brenton's English Translation of Alexandrinus, Samaritan Pentateuch, Samaritan Pentateuch In English, Targum Onkelos, and Targum Onkelos in English.
  • Basic information about the 66 books of the Bible, such as names in English, Hebrew, and Greek (with transliterations and meanings), chapter and verse counts, authors, and dates/locations of writing.
  • Information about named individuals in the Bible, including chapter and verse references.
  • English, Hebrew, and Greek labels (proper names, titles) for individuals, along with their meanings and references.
  • Relationships between individuals (e.g., father, son, mother, daughter, wife, husband, killer, concubine), including relationship types and references.
  • Details on individuals mentioned in specific chapters and verses.
  • Information on Biblical periods of time (epochs), including beginning/ending years, key individuals defining the epoch, and references.
  • Details on key events mentioned in the Bible, including (when identifiable) the year, key individuals involved, locations, and references.
  • Data about places and locations mentioned in the Bible.
  • Names and titles for places, including Hebrew and Greek, Strong's numbers, and meanings.
  • Information on places mentioned in specific verses.
  • Future plans include data about special items like Solomon's Temple or the Ark of the Covenant.

Distribution

The dataset is provided as structured data, primarily in CSV file format. It is available remotely on GitHub and the data.world website. The current version size is 41.78 MB. The collection consists of multiple files; some datasets are complete, while many are still under development. The dataset is updated weekly. Specific numbers for rows or records are not available.

Usage

This dataset is ideal for a variety of applications, including:
  • Enabling modern technology to parse, examine, process, and enrich Scripture.
  • Facilitating individual verification and study of Biblical texts.
  • Creating graph databases to visualise relationships and connections within the Bible.
  • Identifying the number of descendants of figures like Aaron named in the Bible.
  • Tracing genealogical lines, such as the generations between Adam and King David.
  • Running queries to determine time spans between major Biblical events, for example, the period between the Flood and the creation of Solomon's temple.
  • Generating lists of Biblical events that occurred at specific geographical locations.
