About

This dataset provides insights into mammalian sleep patterns and their biological and ecological correlates. Compiled from research by Allison and Cicchetti (1976), it features data for 62 distinct mammal species. The dataset's primary purpose is to enable the study of relationships between an animal's physical characteristics, life history traits, and its sleep behaviour, alongside external factors such as predation risk and overall danger. It serves as a valuable resource for comparative biology and sleep science research.

Columns

The dataset contains eight key columns, each providing specific information about the mammals:
  • body_weight: The animal's body weight, measured in kilograms (kg).
  • brain_weight: The animal's brain weight, measured in grams (g).
  • max_life_span: The maximum recorded life span of the animal, in years. Approximately 6% of entries are missing for this column, denoted by '?'.
  • gestation_time: The gestation period for the animal, in days. Approximately 6% of entries are missing for this column, denoted by '?'.
  • predation_index: An index ranging from 1 to 5, where 1 signifies the minimum likelihood of being preyed upon and 5 signifies the maximum.
  • sleep_exposure_index: An index from 1 to 5, where 1 indicates least exposure during sleep (e.g., sleeping in a protected den) and 5 indicates most exposure.
  • danger_index: An overall danger index from 1 to 5, based on the predation and sleep exposure indices, with 1 representing the least danger from other animals and 5 the most danger.
  • total_sleep: The total daily sleep time for the animal, in hours per day. Approximately 6% of entries are missing for this column, denoted by '?'. This is considered the primary target attribute for analysis.

Distribution

The dataset is provided as a CSV file named dataset_2191_sleep.csv, with a file size of 1.73 kB. It comprises 62 records across 8 distinct columns. While the original data description mentions missing values being denoted by -999.0, the current dataset sample indicates that missing values for max_life_span, gestation_time, and total_sleep are represented by '?'.

Usage

This dataset is ideal for:
  • Comparative biological studies analysing the links between physiological attributes, life history, and sleep patterns across diverse mammalian species.
  • Ecological research investigating how environmental factors like predation and danger influence sleep behaviour.
  • Predictive modelling to forecast sleep duration based on other biological and ecological characteristics.
  • Educational purposes in biology, zoology, and data science courses to demonstrate data analysis techniques with real-world biological data.

Coverage

The dataset's scope encompasses 62 different mammalian species. The data was compiled in 1976, reflecting observations and research from that period. There are no specific geographic or demographic delineations beyond the broad classification of mammals.
