About

This resource provides detailed records of high-value winners from the National Savings and Investments (NS&I) Premium Bond monthly draw. Premium Bonds operate as a savings method in the UK, where invested money is entered into a monthly draw for tax-free prizes that can reach £1,000,000. This dataset specifically captures all prize awards valued at £1,000 or more, offering detailed insight into the frequency and distribution of significant payouts based on the winner's total investment value and geographical location. The core principle is that every pound invested counts as one raffle entry, increasing the probability of a win.

Columns

  • Prize Value: The exact amount of the monetary prize awarded (in GBP). (Note: £1,000 is the most common value captured).
  • Winning Bond NO.: The unique identification number assigned to the specific bond that secured the prize.
  • Total V of Holding: The total investment value held by the winner in their Premium Bond account, up to the current maximum investment limit of £50,000.
  • Area: The geographical location or area within the country (UK) where the winner resides.
  • Val of Bond: The face value of the particular winning bond (in GBP).
  • Dt of Pur: The date when the specific winning bond was originally purchased.

Distribution

The data originated from the official NS&I website, collected by downloading an Excel file which was then converted into a CSV file format. The structure follows 6 specific fields detailing the prize outcome. While the data is generally uniform from 2022 onwards, the initial data format for the December 2021 draw is slightly different. New data is expected to be updated monthly.

Usage

This data resource is highly suitable for various statistical and research applications:
  • Investment Modeling: Analyzing the frequency of wins relative to the size of the holding; for instance, examining why the maximum holding of £50,000 is the most frequently observed holding value among winners.
  • Geographical Analysis: Mapping the distribution of major winners across the UK, allowing for studies comparing outcomes in different regions (e.g., assessing the prevalence of wins in areas like Surrey or Kent).
  • Temporal Tracking: Investigating correlations between the date of purchase of a bond and its eventual success in securing a high-value prize.

Coverage

The temporal scope of the data begins in December 2021 and is updated on a monthly basis. Geographically, the records cover prize winners across various areas of the United Kingdom. The content is strictly limited to high-value prizes, defined as £1,000 or greater.
