About

This dataset contains a collection of astronomical object data from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS) DR16. It comprises both photometric and spectral measurements for a variety of celestial objects, including galaxies, stars, and quasars. The SDSS has meticulously mapped a third of the sky, creating detailed three-dimensional representations of the Universe and collecting spectra for over three million astronomical objects. This dataset offers a glimpse into this extensive survey, enabling exploration and analysis of these diverse cosmic entities.

Columns

The dataset features 18 variables, consisting of 16 double-precision variables and one additional character variable named 'class'. The 'class' variable identifies the object type (galaxy, star, or quasar) and can be predicted from the other 16 variables.
  • objid: Object Identifier
  • ra: J2000 Right Ascension (r-band), a celestial coordinate
  • dec: J2000 Declination (r-band), a celestial coordinate
  • u: Better of deV/Exp magnitude fit (u-band)
  • g: Better of deV/Exp magnitude fit (g-band)
  • r: Better of deV/Exp magnitude fit (r-band)
  • i: Better of deV/Exp magnitude fit (i-band)
  • z: Better of deV/Exp magnitude fit (z-band)
  • run: Run Number, which identifies the specific scan.
  • rerun: Rerun Number, specifying how the image was processed.
  • camcol: Camera column, a number from 1 to 6, identifying the scanline within the run.
  • field: Field number, a part of the entire image corresponding to 2048 by 1489 pixels. The field number typically starts at 11 and can go up to 800.
  • specobjid: Object Identifier related to spectral data.
  • class: Object classification, identifying an object as a galaxy (GALAXY), star (STAR), or quasar (QSO).
  • redshift: Final Redshift value.
  • plate: Plate number.
  • mjd: Modified Julian Date (MJD) of observation.
  • fiberid: Fiber ID.

Distribution

The dataset is typically provided as a CSV (Comma Separated Values) file, with a sample file named Skyserver_12_30_2019 4_49_58 PM.csv having a size of 15.96 MB. It contains 18 columns as detailed above. This sample dataset includes 100,000 records, with all columns showing 100% validity and no missing or mismatched entries for these records.

Usage

This dataset is ideal for various applications within astronomy and data science, including:
  • Classification tasks: Predicting whether an astronomical object is a galaxy, star, or quasar.
  • Exploratory Data Analysis: Understanding the properties and relationships between different celestial objects.
  • Deep Learning: Developing advanced models for object recognition and classification in astronomical images.
  • Astronomical Research: Contributing to the understanding and exploration of the Universe, including the creation of three-dimensional maps of celestial bodies.

Coverage

The data originates from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey's DR16 server, which has conducted deep multi-colour imaging of one-third of the sky. The observations span a time range, with Modified Julian Dates (MJD) from 51608 to 58543, indicating a survey period from approximately 2000 to 2019. The dataset specifically focuses on categorising and characterising galaxies, stars, and quasars. The survey is expected to be updated annually.
