About

This data product offers an in-depth look into Bulgarian pop-folk, locally known as chalga, a popular dance genre with roots in ethno-pop, heavily influenced by Oriental rhythms and instrumentals. Chalga is recognised as a regional branch of Balkan folk music, similar to turbofolk in Serbia and manele in Romania. The genre is notable for its reliance on provocativity, with tracks often containing sexually explicit lyrics, making it a subject of societal debate. The dataset facilitates the scientific study of this musical style, enabling analysis of its evolution and development over time. All tracks included originate from Payner LTD, which is the largest record label and production studio in Bulgaria, dating back to 1990.

Columns

The dataset contains 20 columns, each row representing a unique track:
  • track_id: The unique identifier for the song on Spotify.
  • artist_1, artist_2, artist_3: The pre-processed names of up to the first three artists featured on the track, listed in their order of mention.
  • track_name: The title of the song.
  • datetime: The date and time the corresponding video was uploaded to the 'PlanetaOfficial' YouTube channel.
  • popularity: The track’s popularity score on Spotify (ranging up to a maximum of 77).
  • danceability: A measure of how suitable the track is for dancing, based on factors like rhythm stability, beat strength, and tempo (average is 0.66).
  • energy: A perceptual metric of intensity and activity; energetic tracks typically feel fast, loud, and noisy (average is 0.83).
  • key: The estimated overall musical key, defined using standard Pitch Class notation.
  • loudness: The overall loudness of the track, measured in decibels (average is -4.94 dB).
  • mode: Indicates the modality of the track, where 1 represents Major and 0 represents Minor (Minor mode is more frequent).
  • speechiness: The proportion of detected spoken words in the track (average is 0.09).
  • acousticness: A measure of confidence regarding whether the track is acoustic (average is 0.12).
  • instrumentalness: A prediction of whether the track contains vocals. Most tracks exhibit extremely low instrumentalness (average 0.01), indicating strong vocal presence.
  • liveness: Detects the presence of an audience in the recording (average is 0.21).
  • valence: A measure of the musical positiveness conveyed by the track (average is 0.68).
  • tempo: The overall estimated tempo of the track in beats per minute (BPM) (average is 129 BPM).
  • duration: The duration of the track, measured in milliseconds (average is approximately 223,000 milliseconds).
  • time_signature: The estimated overall time signature (beats per bar), which is 4 beats in the vast majority of tracks.

Distribution

The data is provided in a CSV file, 'payner.csv', measuring 115.83 kB. It comprises 679 resolved tracks. Every row constitutes a track entry. Notably, the data reports zero missing values across all 20 columns. The dataset's purity—defined as the fraction of songs corresponding to video uploads by 'PlanetaOfficial'—is estimated to be very high, falling within the 95% confidence interval of 0.91 to 0.99.
